hp 1020 drivers fail to load in Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by sschuller

I had Ubuntu 8.04, the HP 1020 worked. I did a clean install of 9.04. At first detection of the printer the system loads the foo2 driver and it will not print. I have installed 3.9.2 and 3.9.4b drivers (several times, including a complete new clean install of the system). Same results every time: if the printer is turned off during computer boot-up, then turned on later, the firmware will load to the printer and the printer will work. If I reboot and the printer remains on during the boot-up, it cycles as if loading the firmware (different pattern of cycling, however) and the printer will not work. The issue appears to be a USB problem. In the first instance - computer off during boot, on later, a "direct" hp usb port appears. If the printer is on during boot, no such port appears and the printing seems to hang because the file cannot be sent to the printer. I get messages such as device not found and device not connected.

Please run (as user)

/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp

and (as root)

/usr/lib/cups/backend/usb

and post the output.

Also try disconnecting, power cycling the printer and make sure it is not in an error state.

Thanks.

Aaron,

Third question first: yes, if I disconnect the printer USB cable and power cycle the printer then re-plug the USB, it will load the firmware and work correctly... until the next reboot. Then it will not. Or if I power-cycle and turn the printer off before I reboot the computer and only switch it back on after the computer has booted, it will load the firmware and work properly.

/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp run as user:
direct hp "Unknown" "HP Printer (HPLIP)"

as root:
paula@paula-desktop:~$ sudo /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb
paula@paula-desktop:~$

The above two, of course, were run when the printer was not working. When it is working:

paula@paula-desktop:~$ /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp
direct hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_1020?serial=FN2V255 "HP LaserJet 1020" "HP LaserJet 1020 USB FN2V255 HPLIP" "MFG:HP;MDL:HP LaserJet 1020;CLS:PRINTER;DES:HP LaserJet 1020;SN:FN2V255;"
paula@paula-desktop:~$

paula@paula-desktop:~$ sudo /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb
paula@paula-desktop:~$

Please run

sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog

and then go through the working and not working steps you did above and post the syslog for both cases.

Thanks!

Did you run hp-setup to configure the printer?

I can confirm that the Ubuntu 9.04 printer automatic setup is not working. However if you run hp-setup to configure the printer it does work correctly.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I have run hp-setup. (That also led to downloading the 3.9.4b
firmware).
I've tried removing the HP files completely and reloading them - both from
synaptic and from HP. I've tried 3.9.2 and 3.9.4b firmware... tried to use
the foo2 stuff (didn't work at all). I also completely reloaded Jaunty and
repeated all the above.
The same condition persists: it loads the correct drivers IF they are loaded
once the computer is booted, but the drivers will not be loaded correctly at
boot. The cycling of the printer during formware loading is different in
those two instances. If loaded after booting, the firmware load has a slight
pause in the middle of the printer cycling and the printer then works. The
printer cycle at boot is a single cycle and sounds like it is abruptly
terminated.

Okay to be clear, the firmware loads if you disconnect and reconnect the printer. The firmware does not load when you first boot up the machine.

I'll do some more testing with this and see what I get.

OK... what I mean, of course, is the time when the orange light comes on and
the machine cycles the moving parts.

Hi

I have this problem in a very old computer. With XP, the printer works fine. With ubuntu 9.04 only print until turn off the printer and reboot de pc, in that moment, the printer dont work more.

I have a hp 2133 netbook, when the priner (hp laser jet 1018) is plug in to this netbook, said: I need the software and begin the instalation and the printer works all time.

For that i suposed that is a problem with the usb port.

Please some help is welcome.

Can you help with this problem?
