installation of hplip-3.4.4b failed: 2 errors, not HPLIP installed?

I had a working system under HPLIP 2.8.4 with a minor problem and was advised to install the latest version.
I had tried to remove the older installation as much as possible. Now hp-check announces 2 errors, but I cannot identify them. hp-tools does not seem to be installed, or only open a window that allows no action to be applied.

The errors you are seeing wont stop HPLIP from working.

What is the problem you are having exactly?

First, I was just concerned about the two errors/warnings
in the hp-check output which I could not find.

One printer (Photosmart) seems to work when called from
another application. The Deskjet did not respond.
But when I call up hp-tools from a console what comes up
gives only the 'view printer and device information action'
under the tab 'Actions'. So I cannot choose 'print' or 'scan', etc.
Is this a deliberate change in the behavior or is my installation
not correct?

It shows 3 lines:

When I type hp-info in a console the Device Information window opens
with 4 tabs each containing much information. But I don't know how to
post the output other than copying manually over 100 lines. Do you need
any particular information?

Lets look at the log and see if it gives us any hints.

Run:

su -c "tail -f /var/log/syslog"

then try to print to both printers and post the output.

I don't have /var/log/syslog.
Since hp-toolbox does not allow me to execute any action I have tried to
print a .ps file from the listing in Konqueror. For the Deskjet (USB
connected) there was no response from the printer at all (it is turned
on and has its light on but not status info available in hp-toolbox.
The Photosmart (network connected) printed nicely but in portrait
format although I had set in to landscape which was correctly indicated
in the Konqueror printer properties as well as in the hp-toolbox
'printer settings'.

Since there is no syslog file I include some output of the files in

I can reproduce this and we are researching what might be causing this. Can you run:

hp-toolbox -g

and post the entire output?

Also does this problem go away if you disconnect and reconnect the printer?

Thank you for your help this far.  Unfortunately I am now away from home
and therefore from my two printers until June 15.  After my return I will
test my printers again as you suggested.

I can reproduce the problem where the action items are not being displayed as would be expected. Although for some reason this isn't happening all the time. I'll continue to try and narrow down the problem.
