Ubuntu cannot print on HP deskjet 1510 with cups

Asked by Chas IRONS

I recently upgraded my desktop to Ubuntu 18.04.1. My printer is Deskjet 1510 series PSC ink advantage that is 4 years old.

Different print jobs all start and finish with no result on the printer; just shows job status "Stopped". The hp-check below shows cups is used. Have also seen a message "1filter failed". I have spent days and over 30 emails to ubuntu-users help list with no success. I already downloaded hpcups 3.18.9 but the PPD description still shows 3.17.10 that I do not know how to change.

When I switch to Windows 7 the printer works fine but I only use win7 for my national Tax via browser .

Maybe a PPD for 3.18.9 will fix? I would prefer to work without cups if possible.

Please help an old retired end user.

Thanks and kind regards. Chas

dependencies).

Thanks for your help bloozguy
Just to be clear, you believe I should do these 2 commands shown in the
answer?

I will shout hooray if that works.

Hello bloozguy
I hope you will advise further please.
The two commands showed this result:chas@Charles-PC:~$ sudo rmdir
/usr/share/ghostscript/9.25/iccprofiles
[sudo] password for chas:
chas@Charles-PC:~$ sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgs9-common--
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package libgs9-common-
chas@Charles-PC:~$

I then tried to print a page from a .pdf but that just showed the same
"stopped" message.
The cups help site is way beyond my expertise.
https://wiki.debian.org/DissectingandDebuggingtheCUPSPrintingSystem
How can I print without it?
Your experience is greatly appreciated. Thanks

CUPS is needed for the print to work properly.

Thanks to all those who tried to advise me.

I finally found the Ubuntu-ZA community website and Anton solved the problem using Teamviewer and WhatsApp.

He obviously knows linux very well after working with it for over 10 years.

I still have other issues but hope Anton will solve those as well.

Ubuntu 18.04.1 is working well otherwise and I am grateful that I do not have to learn something else at age 79.

Cheers for now. Chas
