.run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an
already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both
compile- and run-time dependencies).

PROBLEM:
I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
On startup I get the following HPLIP Status Service message:
No system tray detected on this system. Unable to start exiting.
I get this error message when I try to print:
Print command failed with status code 1.

HPLIP was working OK on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

After finding references to this problem on the web, I’ve:
Uninstalled HPLIP
Re-installed HPLIP
I used hp-check to check the installation.

Packages were missing.
Using Synaptic I installed them.
Installed the following packages:
libcanberra-gtk-module (0.30-5ubuntu1)
libcanberra-gtk0 (0.30-5ubuntu1)
Installed the following packages:
overlay-scrollbar-gtk2 (0.2.17.1+16.04.20151117-0ubuntu2)

There were also some problems with Python3, which I seem to have resolved after following instructions on various web pages.

hp-check still shows two warnings:
warning: Failed to read /etc/cups/ppd/DeskJet-3630-series.ppd ppd file
warning: Failed to read /etc/cups/ppd/DeskJet-3630.ppd ppd file
I don’t know what these mean, or whether they are generating the HPLIP Status Service message.

I have just restarted my Linux box (Again).
I am still geting the following HPLIP Status Service message:
No system tray detected on this system. Unable to start exiting.

I am still getting the same error message when I try to print:
Print command failed with status code 1.
lpr -P DeskJet-3630-series -o page-set=all "/home/paul/Documents/Computing/Print Test 1p.rtf"

I can't find a reference to 'Print command failed with status code 1' in the HPLIP Knowledge Base.

I hope that you can help me to print again.
PS: I've put in a full 8 hour shift today.

Hi Paul,

Run "sudo hp-logcapture" command and then print with hp-toolbox or hp-print. It will generate the logs. Please attach the logs .

Also is the mentioned ppd present in /use/share/ppd/HP folder? Run hp-setup with -g option and see if it auto detects correct ppd for your device while adding printer.

Regards,
Srinivas

Hi,
Thanks for replying so quickly.
I've attached the requested logs.
You asked 'Also is the mentioned ppd present in /use/share/ppd/HP folder?'No.Amongst others, there's a file named: hp-deskjet_3630_series.ppd.gz
The hp-check output, which I attached to my original email, contained these two lines:warning: Failed to read /etc/cups/ppd/DeskJet-3630-series.ppd ppd file
warning: Failed to read /etc/cups/ppd/DeskJet-3630.ppd ppd file
I have just checked /etc/cups/ppd/ and these are the four files in the folder:
DeskJet-3630.ppdDeskJet-3630.ppd.ODeskJet-3630-series.ppdDeskJet-3630-series.ppd.O----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Paul,

Looks like hp-setup failed, so try to install plugin with "hp-plugin" command. Then do hp-setup to add your printer.
Also i cannot see your attachments. If issue is not resolved, kindly attach logs as requested to check furthur.

Regards,
Srinivas Teja.

1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or
.run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.

Hi Paul,

Looks like hp-setup failed, so try to install plugin with "hp-plugin" command. Then do hp-setup to add your printer.
Also i cannot see your attachments. If issue is not resolved, kindly attach logs as requested to check furthur.

You are not member of the lp group, but that is a prerequisite for using printers.

Manfred,
I've created a Bug Report: #671218: Print command failed with status code 1
This morning I've deleted all printers.I've installed the HP deskJet 3630
I can print the test page from the HP Device Manager.I can only print a 'corrupted' file from the HP Device Manager.I've attached hplip_troubleshoot_logs.tar.gz to the Bug Report.

Thanks,

Paul

Manfred / Srinivas,
After restarting the Linus box again, I am able to successfully print an .rtf file from within LibreOffice Writer.Printing the same .rtf file using the HP Device Manager, results in pages of text, most of which seem to be print control instructions, (Pieces of my text are visible in amongst the rubbish.).

Thanks,
Paul
