(SOLVED) OS unable to communicate with Printer: Service request (error code 1806) OS: Ubuntu 9.04. - Printer: HP LaserJet P1005 - HPLIP version: 3.9.4b - Error code: 1806 (Service request) (Updated) (SOLVED)

Asked by James Wagner

I have encountered an odd problem with HPLIP and my HP LaserJet P1005 Printer today.

First, here are a few essential facts:

OS: Ubuntu Linux 8.04.2
Printer: HP LaserJet P1005
HPLIP: 2.8.12*
Error code: 1806 - Service request

*Although 2.8.12 is the currently installed version of HPLIP, not even the most recent version (3.9.2) solved the problem. Using the bundled version (2.8.2) did not help either and 2.8.10 failed to operate properly as well.

Yesterday, everything seemed fine with the printer, but today, when I opened HP Device Manager, an error message popped up with the error code 1806 - service request. I have been unable to update my printer's firmware ever since (periodic update or reinstallation is required after every few boot-ups). It always says the device is busy or in an error state, and it won't allow printing a test page either. For some odd reason, it seems to be able to print other documents if I use the built-in print function, but nothing else works.

Here's the log of the hp-check command:

It says some functions were not enabled using the CUPS interface, but even before removing CUPS, it had the same exact problems. Before first adding the printer, I removed the bundled HPLIP 2.8.2 completely (purge) and then installed 3.9.2. After encountering the error and browsing around on the forums, I decided to try 2.8.10 and then 2.8.12, but neither of them were able to solve the problem and I don't see any other issues on the forums with this error code.

If it's any help, I should note that Ubuntu DID install 2-3 updates before I encountered the error, but even with a fresh installation with no other updates installed, it seems to have the error.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Was your printer working fine a couple days ago? I only encountered this problem AFTER installing the aforementioned updates, after which I installed HPLIP.

Everything worked fine yesterday.

Please run hp-check again and post the output.

Also run:

sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog

try and print and post the output in the syslog.

Thanks.

I reinstalled Ubuntu 8.04.2 and without updating anything, I installed HPLIP 3.9.2, completely overwriting the bundled version. After downloading and installing the proper firmware, I encountered the 1806 error again. I ran hp-check as told and here is the result:

By this point, I managed to print 4 images, but at least a minute passed between each job. 3 more documents were in the queue, but the printer gave up completely at that point, and both its lids went out until I restarted it myself.

That's all the information I could gather. Hope it helps!

Run groups and post the output.

I've been unable to reproduce this.

Does the printer work okay on a windows or other system?

Thanks.

I ran 'groups' and this is the result I got:

---

mester@master:~$ groups
mester adm dialout cdrom plugdev lpadmin admin sambashare
mester@master:~$

---

There was a major change, though. I successfully upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04 using a fresh install. I uninstalled the bundled HPLIP (3.9.2) and installed 3.9.4b. The problem, however, still persists.

I haven't tried the printer on Windows or any other systems.

Please run hp-check -t again so I can check your current system configuration.

Also please test on a windows or other system to be sure that this isn't a hardware problem as I am unable to reproduce.

Thanks.

The problem was located in the cartdrigde.
I bought a new one. Problem solved for me.

NicoT: I'm going to re-fill the cartridge soon. It was close to being completely empty, but last time, I didn't receive any error messages. Hopefully that will solve the problem..if not, I guess I might buy a new one.

Aaron Albright: I installed Ubuntu 9.04, yes, but my cartridge is not in the printer. It's in the process of being re-filled, so at this time, I can't provide you the information you seek. As soon as I get it back, though, I'll install the latest HPLIP version and provide you the information you're asking for.

Before taking the cartridge out of it, however, I DID test it on Mandriva 2009.1 Spring and encountered the same error. As soon as the cartridge is back, I might test it out on a Windows virtual machine as well.

Aaron:

I got my cartridge today, and the problem still persists. On Ubuntu 9.04, I ran 'hp-check -t' and got the following result:

HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.

I had the same result on Mandriva 2009.1 (PowerPack). I will get around to testing this on a Windows system soon. I'm really starting to believe it may be a problem with the cartridge itself...

Can you look in your printer manual under "service request" and see if
there's any helpful information there? HPLIP is reporting a hardware error,
but its not specific enough to be useful.

Alright, here are a few things I was able to gather during the past couple days.

dwelch91 - I spent hours reading through the printer's manual. I checked both the English and Hungarian version - Hungarian being my main language - but I didn't find anything regarding 'service request'. I guess that error message appears only in HPLIP and the manual is clearly only for Microsoft Windows and Mac OSX systems. It doesn't mention anything about using the printer on the Linux system, so it didn't help.

Aaron Albright - I AM starting to believe that there is something wrong with the cartridge. I tested the printer on Mandriva 2009.1 and earlier versions of Ubuntu (8.10 and 8.04). All three produced the same error: Service request - error code: 1806.

I used the latest version of HPLIP (3.9.4b) on every version, but it didn't work. I made a virtual machine with VMWare Workstation and installed Windows XP on it. After installing the printer properly on it, I was surprised to see it processing several test pages without any error messages. I printed 20+ images and a couple longer documents as well and the printer processed them without any errors, but I DID found something quite odd:

According to the Supplies Status Page, my cartridge was only 1% full and way below the warning level, which is odd, because the cartridge was refilled only days ago, and ever since getting filled again, yesterday was the first time I used it, so it should've been around maybe 95-99%. Not only that, but the test page could not determine the date of the cartridge's first job. Before the incident, it determined it correctly. The guy I bought the printer from thinks it might be a problem with the cartridge's chip, so I'll give it a shot and replace it. See if it solves the problem.

NicoT - Thanks for the advice, but see above. :)

Yeah, I'm leaning towards a hardware problem. If you continue to need assistance please post an update.

Thanks for your support of HPLIP--we appreciate it.

I'll post an update as soon as I got that chip replaced. Unfortunately I can't do so during the weekend, but hopefully I'll have it done on Monday or Tuesday.

The chip was replaced and it eliminated the problem. The printer works fine and its quality is as good as it was before the whole dilemma.

Thanks for your support, guys. Greatly appreciated.

I'm having the same problem with the very same printer.

Zanth, have you changed the chip on the old cartridge or bought a new cartridge (from HP)?

I got my cartridge refilled and original chip was removed. If it is possible for it to work without a chip, that's my case. Will just adding the chip solve this problem?

Thank you in advance,
Daniel

Hi Daniel.

First of all, I'd like to apologize for responding so late and keeping you waiting...but you were probably able to do something about the problem ever since, hopefully.

If not, well then I hope this helps you.

The cartridge needs the chip. As far as I know, it will not work without one. The chip stores information such as the date of its first use, the total number of documents printed with that chip and a few more minor date the printer requires to work, so no, using the cartridge without the chip will not yield and positive results.

I simply had my cartridge refilled and the chip replaced with a new one, and it has been working for me ever since, both on Windows and Linux (tried a few distros with it) as well, so I think replacing the chip and getting the cartridge itself refilled should solve the problem.

I hope that helps,
Zanth

Thank you for your answer!

As I already said, I got my cartridge refilled, the original chip was removed and no other chip was set. Under Windows it works alright, except it has no information about remaining ink and amount of printed pages.

Under Linux, it actually works as well, but it prints in Economy mode despite of that Normal mode is chosen (everywhere). I asked that on forum: http://tinyurl.com/yae58hp . Maybe adding a chip will help, will try that soon.

One more thing - printing works from evince, oo writer etc. Only when I start HP gui, it shows 1806 error.

It's important to note that HP does not recommend or support refilling HP ink cartridges and doing so may damage and/or cause future warranty issues with the device.

It's obvious that the vendor won't support refilling cartridges, but doing so, it's ~3 times less expensive.
For now it works, at least under windows.

As you may see, I don't check my mail often enough. Sorry about that. :P

Anyway, I'm glad to hear you can at least use the printer. I can only hope Economy mode doesn't make the printed document almost unreadable. For some reason, if I turn Economy mode on and print a few papers with it, the letters on it are...pretty much invisible! Or at least barely visible...but that's not relevant.

I'd love to hear how putting a new chip in affected your problem. Once I had my chip replaced, everything - including HPLIP - stopped complaining about Error 1806, so right now, I can use my printer both on Windows and Linux as well.

Regards,
Zanth
