Can't install hplip-3.18.4: get ~.bin, not ~.run

Asked by Raymond Hubbard

The Sourceforg download site for hplip 3.18.4 yields hplip-3.18.4.bin--every time, never hplip-3.18.4.run. Yet the instructions stipulate the~.run file to install it. Where do I get it, or how do I install from the ~.bin file?

Alternatively, I've downloaded the entire of 3.18.4 set of files, including hplip-3.18.4.tar.gz, but they don't include the ~.run file. And when I try to extract that folder to the hplip-3.18.4 folder, I'm told that's not allowed (it already exists in my Downloads folder). And I can't delete the hplip-3.18.4 folder so as to replace it.

There IS an hplip 3.18.4 folder inside the ~.tar.gz folder, but I it's already full, so I can't extract this folder's contents to it.

I'm stymied! How do I install hplip-3.18.4 into my Linux Mint 17.3 installation with KDE (using Dolphin)?

Thanks.

Regards,
Ray

How and from which source are you downloading the hplip installer file?

Have you tried renaming the *.bin file to *.run?

Hi,
The 3.18.4 .run file can be downloaded from the link – https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/gethplip
Select the distro name in the drop-down box in the link and then click the download button for the .run file.

Thanks and Regards,
Shivani

Yes, I had tried renaming ~.bin to ~.run, but it didn't work. This time I
did again, using JI m's instruction <

cd ~/Downloads/ && chmod +x hplip-3.18.4.run && ./hplip-3.18.4.run>,
and it worked. And, yes, I had used the developers.hp,.com/... site
to download the ~.run file. That's where it always came as ~.bin.
But thanks; I have it now, except the tray icon doesn't work. That's
as it was before.

No, other than the system tray icon's Device Manager's not coming up when
clicked. Oh, I see that I have to close this request. Thanks for
reminding me.
