I have HPLIP installed on my Ubuntu 8, but I can't open it saying "GUI is unavailable", and my xsane doesn't recognize the Officejet j4580

Asked by Diogenes

I have Ubuntu 8, and my printer is an HP Officejet j4580

I can't open HPLIP from the terminal as it says that "GUI is unavailable" and that I need to be in root, which I don't understand what that means

my xsane does not recognize my scanner, and when I select to scan on the printer, it says "no scan options. Check printer documentation for troubleshooting"

HPLIP website says that I need version 2.8.6 or later for Officejet j4580, but I haven't been able to find this version for download on the website. Only 2.8.12 is available

this website: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/officejet/officejet_j4500_series.html

says I need 2.8.6 but directs me to download 2.8.12

HPLIP 2.8.7 comes with Ubuntu 8.10 so to configure the printer you should only need to run:

sudo apt-get install hplip-gui

then run:

sudo hp-setup

then to scan you can run:

xsane

Hope this helps.

the terminal says I have version 2.8.2. This is what I get when I enter your directions:

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 2.8.2)
Printer/Fax Setup Utility ver. 7.0

the program starts up properly, but it doesn't find my USB connected printer and says "make sure you have connected it properly and turned the printer on" even though it is

Oh. My bad, I thought you where running Ubuntu 8.10 which has HPLIP 2.8.7, it appears though that you are running Ubuntu 8.04 which has HPLIP 2.8.2.

So you'll need to upgrade to the latest version of HPLIP for your printer to work.

You can follow the instructions here:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html

Hope this helps and thanks for your support of HPLIP.

if HPLIP 2.8.12 is the latest version, how do you go from 2.8.7 to 2.8.12?

Ok I've done the installation of 2.8.12, but even though the device manager recognizes the new connection the actual printer says, "no scan options. Check documentation...etc" when I select for scan

and when I select Help and then "Using Scan" on the printer it says: "no connection. There is no computer connection. Refer to device documentation."

Please run 'hp-check -t' and post the output here.

do you want all of the output? The whole thing is very long, or just the beginning and the "summary"?

here's all of it anyways:

parham@parham-desktop:~$ hp-check -t

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 2.8.12)
Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.1

Copyright (c) 2001-8 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
This is free software, and you are welcome to distribute it
under certain conditions. See COPYING file for more details.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Saving output in log file: hp-check.log

Initializing. Please wait...

Everything looks okay.

Try running:

sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog

then run:

xsane

and post the output in the /var/log/syslog.

Thanks!

here's the output:

ok this is strange. xscan recognize my scanner when it's turned on, ok that's normal

but when xscan is started, and I try to press the scan button directly on the printer when it's on and it gives me the same problem by saying "no scan options"

but scanning works when my printer is on and I just start xscan, but it doesn't work when I try it straight from the printer

here's the output:

Push to PC Scan is not supported by HPLIP. To scan, run xsane, place the document on the scan glass, click scan in xsane ,etc.
