Can't install HP Photosmart 7660 w/HP Device Manager

Asked by Bobb11

I have a HP Photosmart 7660 connected via USB Port on a Linksys PSUS4 Print Server. When I run hplip Device Manager it does not see the printer. I start Device Manager, select "Network/Ethernet/Wireless(direct connection or jet direct) as the Connection Type. Click on NEXT and Device Manager comes back with the message "No Devices Found".
I'm relatively new to Linux. Running Ubuntu 8.10. Can someone give me some "simple" step by step instructions on how to install this printer with HPLIP Device Manager?
I have 2 other PC's running Windows XP and can install the printer with no problems under Windows. Also, I "can" install the printer (although some things don't work correctly) by going to SYSTEM > ADMINISTRATION > PRINTING > NEW > APP SOCKET/HP JetDirect > And enter the HOST IP address of the print server and it does allow me to sellect the printer from a list of HP printers. And it does install it ok. The problem is, some of the features, such as selecting "Paper Type" are "grayed out" when I try to print something other than a full page print.
I was hoping that by installing the printer thru Device Manager that it would make those features available to me.
Sorry for such a "long winded" explanation of my problem, but ANY help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Bob,

HPLIP only supports HP Jetdirect print server devices. Third party devices generally do not allow for the correct type of communication to happen with HP devices.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

You should still be able to print to this printer, just use the socket: CUPS
backend and HPIJS (not HPLIP). You will not be able to use HPLIP's features
with this print server. Refer to help on cups.org for more info.

Thanks to Aaron and dwelch91 for your responses. The answers you gave were what I suspected. As I said, I can use the printer using CUPS, but was hopping that HPLIP would allow some of the features to work. Again, thanks to both of you for your reply(s).
