Problems with HPLIP 2.8.9 and Mandriva 2008.1PWP

Asked by Peter Moule

In August I purchased an HP Deskjet D1560,looked for drivers and could not find the 1560 listed.
But ,with a friends help, got it printing with the 1400 driver.Doing it this way I cannot clean the heads or monitor the ink levels. On further research I found the HPLIP 2.8.9 for the 1560 on your site.
Now having installed it I can clean heads and monitor the ink but cannot print.
I have emailed H P support and sent them a copy of the output from Konsole as requested but have not received a reply for 10 days. Can anyone help a newbie with this.( Can send copy of output if needed)
Regards,Peter

Could be a permission problem with the "hp" backend. On Mandriva the PAM console permissions for libusb devices can conflict with the "hp" backend at print time. The solution is to have the "hp" backend run as root instead of "lp" at print time. To accomplish this make sure "hp" backend has world read permissions set to zero. The following chmod commands will set the permmission so that cupsd will run the backend as root.

chmod 700 /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp

Also you could try this, go here:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/mandriva.html

And try the steps at Step 7.

Hope this helps.

I've spoken with Dave and the instructions for changing the permissions are outdated. I've modified the page for the next release to reflect the current changes.

If re-installing doesn't help please post an update.

Thanks!
