hp-setup fails to download the plug-in for HP-P1505 laser printer

Asked by Bob_C

Hi-
Thanks for helping me to install my printer.

I'm running Debian Lenny amd64 version and installing the HP-P1505 printer.
My problem sounds similar to the one Ajith had on 2008-04-28. When I use hp-setup, I get as far as the point where the plug is supposed to download, but the process gets frozen there at "ConfigParser.NoSectionError: No section: '2.8.6b'"

I ran hp-check -t, with the output pasted below;

It mentions three errors or warnings
1. "Checking SIP version...
error: SIP not installed or version not found."
When I check my debian repository I don't find a program named SIP, but I do have SIP4 installed.

2. "Checking 'scanext' SANE scanning extension...
error: NOT FOUND OR FAILED TO LOAD! Please reinstall HPLIP and check for the proper installation of scanext."
I reloaded HPLIP using my package manager Synaptic. This did not help things.

3. "Checking for CUPS...
Status: scheduler is running
Version: 1.3.8
error_log is set to level: warn"

I left this alone since I am quite sure its the failure to download the plug-in that is the problem.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper
dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

If possible please try with the lastest HPLIP from http://hplipopensource.com.

Thanks!

Hi Aaron,

Could I download the plug-in, or have it emailed to me? I could then install it with hp-setup, choosing "use an existing copy of the plug-in file", rather then downloading with hp-setup (which is the step that doesn't work for me).

I am reluctant to install the newer version of HPLIP, since it is not yet available in the Debian repository I use (testing). If I do download from http://hplipopensource.com and install manually, I expect to encounter dependency problems, which may lead to more serious issues with my system.

Thanks

You can also try running hp-plugin...this will download the plugin as well.

Also we do test on Debian, and the installer should work. As long as the debian repos you are using are working.

The repositories I use are probably ok, they are
http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ testing.

Hi Aaron,

I checked for hp-plugin and can't find it on my system. It's not
mentioned either, in the list of "installed files" associated with my
version of hplip, 2.8.6.b-1.

I did a web search for hp-plugin and found it mentioned in a bug report
for the version of HPLIP I have installed, 2.8.6.b-1.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/256410

>From a link mentioned in this bug report,
http://www.linuxprinting.org/download/printdriver/auxfiles/HP/plugins/,
I was able to download two files needed so that I could install with
hp-setup, pointing at local files.

1. hp_laserjet_p1505.plugin
I downloaded this gzipped tar file to a folder I called hp-1505 on my
desktop. I extracted it there.

2. hplip-2.8.6b-plugin.run
I downloaded this to the folder hp-1505.

3. I then ran hp-setup and at the point where it gives the option of
using a local file of the .run type. I pointed it to the hp-1505
directory and the installation seemed to work.

Thanks for helping with this problem.

Hey Bob,

The defect was fixed in releases after 2.8.6b. So if you are using version after that you shouldn't have any problems.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Aaron
