You could try cleaning the copper colored contacts on the cartridge with a
pink pencil eraser, and then re-insert the cartridge.

I don't think so, because the printer itself also shows a error message in its build-in display. It's in german, so i don't know the exact english translation, but it says: "cartrige damaged or not available".

But i am going to try it also in windows after next reboot...

Thanks Aaron Albright, that solved my question.

There was a bug in the updates on June 6 from Ubuntu(19 updates) and supposedly bug was corrected June 7(1 update). Immediately following June 6 update my HP4700 printer began showing error 1017(print cartridge problem) and since the June 7 update continues to show the same error.Cartridges have been cleaned and reinstalled and 'device setup' does not respond.Any next steps? John
