With Ubuntu 8.04 you'll need to install python-qt3 for HPLIP to work correctly.

Run: sudo apt-get install python-qt3

As for the device communication error--HPLIP is not detecting the printer. Please restart the printer and disconnect/reconnect the printer. Then run: hp-makeuri and post the output.

Okay

CUPS URI: hp:/usb/PSC_1400_series?serial=CN55OB717304BN
SANE URI: hpaio:/usb/PSC_1400_series?serial=CN55OB717304BN

Looks good. Run: sudo hp-setup

And see if that works to configure the printer.

Thanks Aaron

I must accept that my PSC 1410 cannot send faxes .

I still get "Device not found" when I start the HP Toolbox but I am sure the printer will still work well .

Does the printer print okay? Fax should work as well. However if you are getting device not found then printing and fax wont work.

Please run

lsusb and post the output.

Also run:

/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp

and post that as well.

Hi Aaron

I really appreciate your help .

A friend with Ubuntu says I could only send fax if I use my dial-up

So maybe I am wasting your time ?

To fax you need to have the printer plugged into a regular (land line) phone line. Although I'm not sure of if it's more complicated with using ADSL, you may need to check with your phone company/provider.

All the best!
