HPOJ K80xi no longer prints .pdf files

Asked by Robert

I am using Ubuntu 7.04 with a HP Office-Jet K80xi. HPLIP ver. 2.7.6 is installed. It has worked successfully for several months, but then I connected printer to another computer. It is now back on original computer. Normal text files print fine, but .pdf files simply stack up in queue. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance - Bob T.

Hey Bob

Can you enable your CUPS debugging log by..

As root - For example...
# gedit /etc/cups/cupd.conf

Then change
LogLevel info

to

LogLevel debug

Save the file and close your editor. Then restart CUPS.

# sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

Then run a PDF print job and let it fail. Then post back or use pastebin.com to post back your /var/log/cups/error_log file.

Thanks

jh

Let me restate the problem. In following your suggestion, I discovered
some information which may be pertinent. If you still want the file (it
was about 6 megs in size) I'll send it. I can copy the file to a new
name, and then delete all entrys before today?
_*Revised Problem Statement
*_I received an email with 2 .pdf files. The first file was 1 page long
and printed with no problems. The second file was 5 pages long and would
not print. It did show in lpstat and lpq.

BTW, my config file is cupsd.conf. not cupd.conf.

I've tried several ways of printing the files. First, while inside the
email, I click on FILE, then ATTACHMENTS, then OPEN (which brings up
EVINCE), etc. Second, I double click on the attachment name (brings up
EVINCE). etc. Third, I copy the attachment to a folder in Desktop, the
from command line in Virtual Terminal, say TTY#4, type "lp
DesktopSupportServiceDescriptionv1.2.pdf" (the file name). None of the 3
methods works, although the file name shown in the printer queue is
listed as "EVINCE: in the first 2 methods and correctly for the last method.

I was reading a bug on the ubuntu forum about printing with Evince. Seems like PDFs a certain size or larger causes the job to hang. Any chance you could try printing those same files from Adobe?

If you cannot then please try this...

$ tail -f /var/log/cups/error_log

Then run a print job to fail...

Then cut and past back the output from the tail window.

Thanks

John:
I am in the process of complying with your request. In the meantime, I
have 2 pieces of more information: first, since I couldn't print the
file, I emailed it to Kinkos. They use AdobeReader. Second, I received
a 3rd .pdf file. 12 pages long. It printed just fine? I don't have
Adobe set up?

I'm going to direct the last 30 pages of the error_log to a file and
then attach that file to this reply. The command used is
      "tail -30 /var/log/cups/error_log > tail_cups_error_log.txt"
I'll do this after running the mystery file that fails.

Thanks again for all the support - Bob T.

John:
Attached are (1) the culprit file of 5 pages, and (2) the last 40
entrees of the cups_error_log.

Are these what you want? I will be away from the computer shortly. until
tomorrow. I googled and found a known bug in Ubuntu(EVINCE), but then it
wouldn't print from the command line either.

Again. I really appreciate your help. Thanks, Bob T.

Hey Bob.

I just noticed your using a verion of HPLIP that's a year old. Not sure if you want to update...but its an option. I'm also not saying it will fix your issue.

Please install the latest hplip and give that a try. If that doesn't work run hp-check -t and post the output.

You could also set cups to debug, view the cups log and we'll get a better idea of the specific reason it's not printing.

For how to setup cups to view the cups error log go here:
