Photosmart C4280 gives USB Not Connected error message in scan mode

Asked by Paul Swenson

Working in an Ubuntu 7.10 environment. I downloaded latest version of HPLIP software and printing and scanning functions work fine when initiated from the computer/HP Device Manager. But when I try to initiate a scan from the printer I get the error message 'USB Not Connected' I tried restarting the computer and unplugged/replugged USB cable from printer and restarted, but nothing seems to work. Should I be able to initiate a scan using the printer console and if yes, how do I do it? Thanks for your help.

Paul,

HPLIP does not support push button scanning. We might be implmenting this in the future however I don't have any ETA or make any promises.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks for your support of HPLIP.

Aaron

Thanks Aaron. I can live with that. I think HPLIP is great!

I have the same error message on the printer console. I also turned off the computer. Turned off the scanner. Unplugged the USB cable. Even cut the power at the surge protector, came back an hour later to put it all together and got the same behavoir. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer and scanner drivers from the original installation CD, but it's just the same error:

I can scan when initiated from the computer, but get 'USB not connected' on the printer when I press 'Scan' on the printer.

What confuses me to no end is that this all worked perfectly when I scanned something a few days ago! It's always been the most trouble-free device I've ever owned. My computer and software are the same. I didn't change any printer or scanner settings. I'm absolutely baffled as to how it could work properly for a year and suddenly stop working.

Did a recent update disable the feature? (this printer automatically downloads its own updates) Is the 'Scan' button simply not supported anymore? Is this just a way to get me to buy something else? Does anybody have any ideas as to what's even going on, if not a way to fix it?

I'm so sorry! I was just following the error messages and thought I was posting to a general HP support forum. I'm using the device under both Windows XP and OS X 5 with drivers from an installation CD. I feel very silly now. Please forgive me.
