hp-systray broken

Asked by Tim Waugh

The 'hp-systray' application fails to put its icon in the actual notification area for me, using Fedora devel and GNOME. Instead, it gets placed like a window.

Why does it need to display an icon all the time? Isn't it only needed to ask for a fax number when sending faxes?

hp-systray (the qt3 version) does exhibit this problem occasionally. I have
not determined what the exact cause is. There is a Qt4 version available
(using Trolltech's own implementation) that works 100% (use the --qt4
flag).

hp-systray does facilitate hp-sendfax communication, and it also manages
some printer event and data storage when hp-toolbox is not running. It will
have more functions in the future. It does not always need to be running,
and a user can remove it from auto start programs if they desire with the
only "bad" effect (curently) being that fax will not work and status history
will be missing. Again, it is going to get more functionality in the future,
so this is likely to change.

The icon doesn't always need to be visible. Are there plans to make it appear only when showing a dialog?

No, there were no plans for this. There are plans for adding some "quick
access" type functionality, so I was not planning on ever hiding the icon
for this reason.

As a distro package maintainer, you are completely free to not install
the.desktop file for the systray applet and have it only run automatically
when needed (e.g., hp-toolbox launched).
