Linux printin with HP M2727NFS (printcap)

Asked by Michael Worthy

We are currently using RedHat 7.
I need to print to a specifc tray, and would like to know if the HP M2727NFS will be compatible with RedHat (printcap file) to specifically choose a tray. For example, code as below in the printcap file should allow us to choose a specific printer tray.

testprinter1,
 is1=\EE\E&10O\E(8U\E(s0P\e&k2G\E(s0S\e(s0B\E&d@\E)10U\E&120H,

The M2727 is supported since hplip 2.7.11.

http://hplip.sourceforge.net/models/laserjet/hp_laserjet_m2727nf_mfp.html

However we do not support Red Hat 7 because it's very aged and untested. You may be able to get it working following the similar install instructions for Red Hat 9..

Hope this helps!

I assume that "printcap file" means that ther is no CUPS in use
but whatever older LPD spooler (e.g. LPRng or something like this).

On the one hand
https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+faq/74
reads: "Install CUPS 1.2 from source"
but on the other hand
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/system_requirements.html
reads: "CUPS 1.1.15 or higher"

Does this mean that
HPLIP cannot be uses at all witn an older LPD spooler
and that
CUPS 1.2 or higher is actually required?

If HPLIP can be used with an older LPD spooler,
do you know about documentation how to set up
a current HPLIP version for an older LPD spooler?

HPLIP requires CUPS 1.1.x or newer (HPLIP, meaning the full solution with
the toolbox, bidi I/O, scan, fax, etc).

For just printing, you can use HPIJS and any spooling system (LPD, LPRng,
etc) using foomatic.
