hplip on Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 4
Has anyone gotten hplip working with RHEL WS 4 ?
I'm trying to get an HP Officejet Pro K850 to work on my Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 4 workstations.
I downloaded hplip-2.8.2.tar.gz from http://
After the most unbelievable dependency hell I've ever seen, I finally managed to install all the dependencies (or so I thought) and compile the package, but hp-setup still fails at runtime with :
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/
import subprocess, threading, tempfile
ImportError: No module named subprocess

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball
(.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm,
etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above
cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

A new dependency issue with 2.8.4. Will this even work on RHEL?

Update: I discovered at https:/
that I can get around the dbus-1 dependency by --disable-fax-build in ./configure.
Thanks Aaron!
But now hp-check -t reports two missing runtime dependencies:
Checking for dependency: python-ctypes - A foreign function library for Python...
error: NOT FOUND! This is a REQUIRED/RUNTIME ONLY dependency.
Checking for dependency: python-dbus - Python bindings for dbus...
error: NOT FOUND! This is a REQUIRED/RUNTIME ONLY dependency.
I really appreciate all the help here - but Why is it so hard to get hplip working on a mainstream distribution like Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 4? Am I missing something that should be obvious?

Now I can't even log in to X11.
~/.xsessionerrors implicates selinux & dbus.
"Failed to open /etc/selinux/
This happens even if I disable selinux.
What a PITA
# /etc/init.d/hplip start

Starting hpssd: File "./hpssd.py", line 131
@dbus.

That syntax error is because of your Python version. I believe decorators
were added in Python 2.3 or 2.4. What version of Python do you have?
To eliminate this problem, remove the hp-systray desktop startup item, or
upgrade your Python version.

Also, there is no init.d startup script in 2.8.4 (as there are no startup
daemons). This startup script must be from a previous version of HPLIP.
(Also, hpiod no longer exists in 2.8.4. It looks like your system has some
debris from an older version).
