HP 9800 USB to Parallel is recognised but won't print

Asked by zeddock

I need to use a large format printer which does not have a USB port, but a Centronics; it is an HP DeskJet 9800.
I am using Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop and have tried several different ways to make it work but test prints don't happen.

If I hook up one (I have tried two different cables, both of which work on an XP and Vista OS machine,) USB to Centronics cables without it being connected to the printer, the cable is seen but a driver is not found.
If I hook it into the computer AFTER I have connected it to the printer, UBUNTU see it as an HP 9800.

I have tried to use the PPD driver and the foo driver. I have tried to install it through Sys / Admin Printers Add... and through HPLIB 2.8.2. (I have been unable to try with an earlier version of HPLIB.)

Regardless, I cannot get the thing to print! Again.... It works fine on MS OS, which burns me up!

Folks, I need some help with this.

PS. I tried to add it with lsusb id too.

Please help soon? Or tell me how I can get support for this convoluted situation of Ubuntu, HP 9800, USB=>Centronics adapter.

I will have to get it working soon or go buy another. I am already looking pretty silly to the boss. (He keeps saying it is because of Linux!)

Thanx!

Zeddock,

With the printer connected run:

/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp

and post the output.

To be clear you are trying to use a parallel to usb converter to connect the printer to your Ubuntu system, or you are using a usb to parallel converter?

Thanks.

Here is the output...
jim@latlap:~$ /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp
direct hp "Unknown" "HP Printer (HPLIP)"
jim@latlap:~$

I am attempting to use the 9800, which is a Parallel-only printer, by way of a USB to Centronics Cable.

Zeddock,

The HP backend isn't detecting the printer correctly, probably because the usb to centronics isn't allowing the protocal to talk in the way HPLIP needs it to.

The usb/parallel, parallel/usb devices are not supported. Because there are so many hardware vendors it's impossible for us to test all hardware configurations.

If it's possible to connect the printer directly via parallel you may have better luck. Although keep in mind that your HPLIP install is configure as pp-build=no, which means that you'll need to re-install HPLIP, do a custom install and be sure to enable parallel support.

Sorry I couldn't help more.

Thanx.
I have been successful with a netgear PS-101, which is a network
print-server that attaches directly to the printer's centrolnics connector.

I want to suggest that someone update the Open Linux list of printers which
work. The 9800 is set at Perfectly, and I think it should mention PARALLEL
ONLY.
