Ubuntu 7.10: Print jobs 'stopped' and won't start!
I can print from Evince and various photo packages, but when I print from Open Office, Firefox or Opera the job lands in the queue and and under Status displays 'Stopped'. Nothing will start it!
Until I realised that it happenned in Mozilla and Opera I though it might be an OO problem.
Am puzzled....
I have a HP8750, and Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon.

Please run hp-check -t and post the output.
If you get an error, run the printingbuginfo script and post that output.

Aaron,
hp-check isn't installed and I can't find where to get it from.
If its of any help, here's the screenshot for localhost:
http://
No 'start' option, but clicking 'reprint' gives the message that the job has been restarted, but it hasn't been. Printing a test page works - after doing this the job seen on the screenshot disappeared from the localhost:
I ran PrintingBugInfo - output below

Tim,
It's okay if you got an error about hp-check , this means you are using the hplip that comes pre-installed with Ubuntu.
Has the printer ever printed in your current configuration?
How did you configure the printer?
Try running "sudo aa-complain cupsd" and then printing. Do you have the same problem?
All the best,
A

Despite having Ubuntu since October I can't remember having printed from Open Office - just pdfs from Evince and photos from various packages which have been fine, and still are. Its probably best to make the presumption its always been like this, but I'm not 100% sure.
I ran sudo aa-complain cupsd. No change.
I have found that if the printer is off and I try and print from OO, the printer powers up itself, but nothing on its display indicates a job is present. Also when this happens the job on the computer shows 'processing' until the printer is up - its at this point that it stops.
I can't remember doing anything initially to configure the printer - memory tells me it was just there and recognised by HPLIP. The .ppd file has been changed since following the info you gave in https:/
Thanks,

Tim,
Sorry maybe I missed something. You -can- print from other applications--just not openoffice?

Is it possible to remove the preinstalled hplip and install the latest hplip from source?
Thanks!

Installed 2.8.2 from hplip.sourcefor
Tried OO - job stopped in queue as before. All options bar 'Cancel' greyed out as before.
Tried a .pdf from Evince - printed fine as before.
thanks for the continued help anyway!

Tim,
Please put cups into debug mode (issue 2): http://
View the cups log, try and print and then post the cups log to http://
Also try running sudo apt-get remove hplip and then try printing again. Although I'm starting to think this isn't an hplip problem, but lets look at the log to be sure. The reason to remove hplip is that sometimes it's not removed during the source install and can cause a conflict.

Further info...
I've checked Abiword - that doesn't print either.
Also, since installing HPLIP from sourceforge I have started getting yellow 'balloons' (the sort that also appear on the Ubuntu/Gnome desktop telling you about pending system updates and such things) telling me that the printer may not be connected. This happens about a minute after attempting to print something that sticks in the queue.
On the last two occasions of getting these messages I have then gone to Evince and successfully printed a .pdf, so clearly the printer is connected, but maybe on occasion HPLIP/CUPS doesn't think so - depending on the package that is doing the printing????
Yours in puzzlement,
--- Tim.

When you installed hplip from source did you delete the printer queues and re-add them using hp-setup? May want to try that..

It looks like gs is erroring out. Try running sudo apt-get remove gs and then sudo apt-get clean, sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get install gs
Does that make any difference?

IT WORKS! :-) :-) :-) :-)
I have deleted the printers via System-
I picked the second .ppd file - the one labelled '(recommended)'.
Thanks very much Aaron - your time, effort and knowledge is much appreciated!

PS. Never got as far as wiping and re-installing gs. Seems fine now though.
Thanks again, Tim.
