HPLIP HP8750 no grey photo printing

Asked by TimGS

I have a HP8750 and use it alot for B&W printing. However I cannot find any photo quality options on HPLIP that just use the grey photo cartridge. The greyscale options on there are not photo quality and imply that the colour cartridges are still used.

Is there a way of forcing photo printing on the grey cartridge only, as on the Windows XP driver?

Also, I believe the Windows XP driver had a 'Best' option of 600dpi with photo quality results. The 600dpi option on HPLIP does not give photo quality results, and the 1200dpi is quite slow. I can live with this, but am curious as to whether I need to, i.e. am I missing something!

Tim,

I have been able to reproduce this and I'm working on a work around.

Tim,

Edit the file:

/etc/cups/ppd/Photosmart_8700_series.ppd

Change the line:
*FoomaticRIPOptionSetting PrintoutMode=Normal.Gray: "Quality=300Graysc&&aleCMYK"
To:
*FoomaticRIPOptionSetting PrintoutMode=Normal.Gray: "Quality=600Graysc&&aleK"

Find the section:
OpenUI *Quality/Resolution, Quality, Ink Type, Media Type: PickOne

Add to the bottom of the section:

*Quality 600GrayscaleK/600 dpi, Grayscale, Black Cartr.: "%% FoomaticRIPOptionSetting: Quality=600GrayscaleK"
*FoomaticRIPOptionSetting Quality=600GrayscaleK: " -r600 -sIjsParam&&
s=Quality:Quality=0,Quality:ColorMode=0,Quality:MediaType=0,Quality:Pe&&
nSet=0"
*End

Save the file select Normal Grayscale and it should print in Grayscale. Let me know if you have any problems. This will be fixed in a future release. Sorry about that.

Aaron,

The above sorted out 'normal' 600dpi printing.

For 1200dpi I tried adding...
*PrintoutMode Photo.Gray/Photo Greyscale (on photo paper): "%% FoomaticRIPOptionSetting: PrintoutMode=Photo.Gray"
*FoomaticRIPOptionSetting PrintoutMode=Photo.Gray: "Quality=1200PhotoGrayKFu&&
llBleed"

...to the first section and...
*Quality 1200PhotoGrayK/1200 dpi, Photo Gray, Black Cartr., Photo Paper: "%% FoomaticRIPOptionSetting: Quality=1200PhotoGrayK"
*FoomaticRIPOptionSetting Quality=1200PhotoGrayK: " -r1200 -sIjsParams=&&
Quality:Quality=3,Quality:ColorMode=0,Quality:MediaType=2,Quality:PenS&&
et=2"
*End
*Quality 1200PhotoGrayKFullBleed/1200 dpi, Photo Gray, Full Bleed, Black Cartr., Photo Paper: "%% FoomaticRIPOptionSetting: Quality=1200PhotoGrayKFullBleed"
*FoomaticRIPOptionSetting Quality=1200PhotoGrayKFullBleed: " -r1200 -sI&&
jsParams=Quality:Quality=3,Quality:ColorMode=0,Quality:MediaType=2,Qua&&
lity:PenSet=2,Quality:FullBleed=1"
*End

to the second section in an attempt to duplicate this for photo printing. Unfortunately although the new 'Photo Gray' options appear in HPLIP they result in normal printing and also result in just one zoomed in section of photo being printed.

Tim,

I can reproduce this using your code. Actually for now if you remove the tri-color ink pen and print using the 1200dpi color/black cartridge mode it will print in grey. Although this is a temporary work around--but it will print in 1200dpi using the grey. I've spoken with Raghu and he's going to be looking at what needs to be changed to support 1200dpi grey better in the future.

Hope this helps.

I have the same problem with HP PS 8450. What is the status on the 1200dpi grey support?

Also will there be updated ppd files for 8750 and 8450 with the selection for grey only modes?

t8m, please submit a new ticket for your question. It greatly helps with tracking what the status of the tickets are.

Thanks!

I'm also looking for high quality grey printing on my D4363. By the way, are there any plans to bring 4800x1200dpi to HPLIP? Looks like there is a version for OS X Cups, so what about Linux?

Can you help with this problem?
