/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed

Asked by J. Duimstra

Hi,

I'm trying to get my networked CLJ 2605dn running under Debian 4.0. I've got HPLIP 2.8.2 installed and can see the printer in the CUPS browser. When I try to print a tested page however I get the error:

"/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed"

Thanks,
Joe

The output of
/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp

is:

direct hp "Unknown" "HP Printer (HPLIP)"

The output of
hp-check -t

1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling theHPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependenciesare installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Are you using any hubs?

Also run:
tail -f /var/log/messages

and then run
/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp

and post the output in the /var/log/messages.

Thanks!

I don't think I have any hubs in use--the printer and the linux box are both connected to the router I have connected to my cable modem.

The output from:

Hope that helps!

I tried connecting up my Officejet 5610 All-in-One via USB and this printed ok except the top header was cut off.

I then tried connecting the HP_Color_LaserJet_2605dn via USB and this too was configurable via:
hp-setup

and it printed well too.

So I guess the problem must be a network related issue?

Joe,

It would seem to be a network problem for sure. I've also verified that a Color LaserJet 2850 works over the network with HPLIP 2.8.2.

If you don't mind reconnect the printer to the network, then run:

hp-makeuri <ip.address.of.printer>

And post the output.

So I tried running:
hp-makeuri 192.168.0.6

and received the following output:

This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
This is free software, and you are welcome to distribute it

error: Device not found

Then I tried running:
hp-setup

and I selected the 2605 at 192.168.0.6 that was displayed in the gui, but
received the following:

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 2.8.2)
Printer/Fax Setup Utility ver. 7.0

Copyright (c) 2001-7 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.

error: Printer queue setup failed. Please restart CUPS and try again.
Done.

I restarted cupsd, tried hp-setup again and got the same result.

Thanks,
Joe

I think there is a problem with the snmp installed on your system. Try removing snmp and re-installing, then try the hp-makeuri again. and/or if your computer has a firewall configured be sure that that correct ports are open.

http://hplip.sourceforge.net/troubleshooting/network.html

You could also try the snmpwalk, however the hp-makeuri does the same test.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice, Aaron.

I completely removed snmp and snmpd, reinstalled them and tried:
hp-makeuri 192.168.0.6

this gave:

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 2.8.2)
Device URI Creation Utility ver. 4.3

Copyright (c) 2001-7 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
This is free software, and you are welcome to distribute it
under certain conditions. See COPYING file for more details.

error: Device not found

as before.

I can ping the printer and when I ran snmpwalk as per the directions on
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/troubleshooting/network.html

I received:

enterprises.11.2.3.9.1.1.7.0 = STRING:
"MFG:Hewlett-Packard;CMD:PJL,PML,POSTSCRIPT,PCLXL,PCL;MDL:HP Color LaserJet
2605dn;CLS:PRINTER;DES:Hewlett-Packard Color LaserJet
2605dn;MEM:MEM=54MB;COMMENT:RES=1200x1;"

trying again:
hp-makeuri 192.168.0.6
gave the same result as the first time.

Apparently there is some problem with cups adding cups queues with spaces in the names. We're going to verify, and possibly add some checks for this in the future.

Joe if you don't mind confirming this fixed for you?

So after having installed the 2605dn via usb I had an existing
HP_Color_LaserJet_2605dn in cups. Then trying to add the 2605dn as a
networked printer didn't allow me to proceed past the Enter Printer
Information in the Printer Setup Wizard. I tried appending " network" this
allowed me to proceed but gave a cups error. Appending "_network" to the
name solved the problem.
