unacceptable laserjet 1022 output

Asked by Bill Bailey

I have an HP Laserjet 1022 printer. Ever since I first got it I have had problems with its output. Some pages are OK, but others (far too many) are not OK. Some pages have very thin horizontal lines running through the text (a few lines--not all lines), and some (many) pages have goofy characters (hearts, funny faces, superscritps, etc) at unpredictable times. Often they begin in the left margin. I have been running Mepis 6.0. Out of frustration with this problem I just tried Mepis 7.0, and the horizontal-line problem still exists. I have printed only 2 pages under Mepis 7.0, but both of them (1 being the printer installation test page) have the thin horizontal line, which often extends into the right margin. No goofy characters appeared on these 2 pages, but .... I have a stack of junk pages that is at least 5/8 of an inch thick. If I unplug the printer from the computer and print a test page, it is OK; so the problem seems to be computer related rather than just the printer itself. The problem spans applications. It occurs under Open Office Writer, under a ghostscript file produced by Writer, and when I print from a PDF produced by Writer (print to file and then run ps2pdf to convert the Ghostscript file to a PDF). I am not running a network. Mepis 7.0's print manager tells me that the HPLIP is "Foomatic/hpijs - 2.7.10." Last week I printed a 26-page PDF. I got 5 good pages, 18 pages with the thin horizontal lines, and 3 pages with goofy characters. NO GOOD!!! Your help will be appreciated.

Please run hp-check -t and post the output. Also if you could please provide me with a test document (either by link or email) this will greatly help me to try and reproduce your problem.

Also if hp-check doesn't run (error command not found), you are probably using the pre-packaged hplip by Mepis, if possible uninstall the hplip that comes pre-installed and install the latest hplip from http://hplip.sf.net.

I'll do some large document printing with the LJ1022 anyway and see if I have anything similar.

Thanks!

Aaron

Another thing to note is which print path you are using, this printer
has PCL3 and ZJStream print paths. What you describe makes me think
you are running in the PCL3 path and there is communication problem,
bad port, bad cable... perhaps.
The ZJStream path requires a binary plug-in which hp-setup will help you install.

Attached to this note is a PDF containing 4 pages, each of which has the
problems I mentioned. I ran hp-check -t, and I got the "command not found"
error you mentioned. I searched my computer for info about the print path,
but so far I have found nothing. If you can enlighten me on that point, I
will appreciate it. I will search past hplip posts for info on how to
uninstall the current version of hplip and install the new version. I'm no
Linux guru; so it may take me a while. Thanks so much for your help.

Bill,

The launchpad.net answers thing doesn't accept attachments for some reason. I hope they are planning on adding this in the future. Anyway if you don't mind email it to me directly that would be great. ke7ezt(at)gmail.

As for hp-check not working, this means that you have a pre-pachaged hplip that came with your linux distro, and sometimes they like to change stuff around.

You may want to uninstall the mepis package and install the latest hplip from source (http://hplip.sf.net) and see if you have better results. I'll still do a quick test to see if it's happening on my system with the latest hplip.

This morning I made a PDF of a 32-page document prepared with Writer. I then booted under Windows and printed 29 pages on the same Laserjet 1022 printer whose output I have described as "unacceptable." I used Adobe's Acrobat Reader. The Windows output was perfect (no thin lines and no goofy characters). That result pretty much eliminates the cable as the problem under Linux. The difference in print speed between Linux and Windows is HUGE. It's the difference between night and day. Windows prints the first page with only a slight hesitation, and subsequent pages print one right after the other. Under Linux, it takes a loooong time for the first page to print, and many seconds (20 or 30) elapse between the printing of each page.

My conclusion: The problem is not the printer or the USB cable or the document being printed. The problem is within Linux and its print system (HPLIP presumably).

I ran hp-setup, and it installed a plug-in. I just printed 4 pages (28-31) using Writer. I got 5 pages of output. Half of page 30 printed on one page, and the other half printed on a separate page. The first of those 2 pages ends with a line of goofy characters starting in the left margin and extending well into the right margin. Two of the printed lines have the same thin horizontal line of which I previously spoke. One of those thin lines extends well into the right margin. I see no improvement whatsoever.

This tells me that the printer is used in its PCL mode.
Check that the installed ppd is selecting the correct device.
The ppd file will be in /etc/cups/ppd/<PRINTER_QUEUE_NAME>.ppd
and look for -sDEVICE= field. It should be "HP LaserJet 1022".

That ppd has only 1 line containing "-sDEVICE=" and it reads as follows:

USE -sDEVICE=ijs -sIjsServer=hpijs%A%B%C%D -dIjsUseOutputFD%Z -sOutputFi&&
le=- -"

Oops, sorry. Meant to say -sDeviceModel=
the "&&" indicates line continuation.

No other line in the file contains the string -sDeviceModel=

Fellows:

I printed 4 pages today, and all 4 are OK. Let's wait a few days and see how it goes. However, I am interested in any thoughts you may have about the big difference in print speed between Windows v. Linux.

Thank you for your help.

You did not miss an e-mail. I do not know what I did to make it work. I
noticed that the print menu in Writer showed 2 instances of the Laserjet
1022. I then printed a page with each of them, and both of them worked; so I
deleted one instance of the printer. I then tried to print, and the printer
would not print at all. I used the print manager to check the info about the
printer. Everything looked OK to me; so I decided to reboot. I rebooted, and
everything then worked perfectly. I have no idea what I did that solved the
problems.
