New officejet 6700 does not work with centos 6

Asked by alain williams

I have a new HP officejet 6700 premium. I want to use it with centos 6.5, 64 bit AMD.
It is connected via USB and also has an IP address.
The machine has hplip 3.12.4 installed.
I want to print and scan.

If I try to set up via CUPS (web localhost:631) I get messages like this in /var/log/messages
Oct 20 17:31:15 mint kernel: xhci_hcd 0000:02:00.0: ERROR: unexpected command completion code 0x11.
Oct 20 17:31:15 mint kernel: usb 8-1: Not enough bandwidth for altsetting 0

Oct 20 17:31:15 mint kernel: usb 8-1: Not enough bandwidth for altsetting 0

I also try this and get the following messages: hp-setup -b usb

/warning: No PPD found for model officejet_6700 using new algorithm. Trying old algorithm...
error: No PPD found for model officejet_6700 using old algorithm.
error: Device busy: hpfax:/usb/Officejet_6700?serial=CN42KDS2JQ05RQ
error: Unable to communicate with the device. Please check the device and try again.

hp-check -t [run as root] (output later) complains about missing libusb - but that is false, it is installed. My previous printer was USB attached.
It also complains that '~/.hplip/hplip.conf' does not exist, I assume that this would get created when config happened

Also complains that libnetsnmp-devel is not installed - true, but net-snmp-libs is installed and I am not compiling it.
Also complains that dbus is not installed - dbus 1.2.24 is installed.

CUPS was not running when I ran hp-check - but that does not change much if it is running.

Hi,

Can yo please try the following steps.

1. Remove the existing print queues using 'hp-setup -r' from the terminal.
2. Download and install the latest HPLIP 3.14.10 release from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/gethplip.html.
3. Re-configure the queue again using 'hp-setup' from the terminal.

If the problem still persists, please paste the output of 'hp-check' again.

Thanks and Regards,
Srikanth Lokare

When I run hp-setup I see in the GUI:

Unable to communicate with the device. Please check the device and try again.

and in the terminal that I started it from:

    error: Device busy: hpfax:/usb/Officejet_6700?serial=CN42KDS2JQ05RQ
error: Unable to communicate with the device. Please check the device and try again.

Also many like the line below - which I doubt is the issue:

    (process:4321): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_style_get: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed

If I run lsusb I see:

In /var/log/messages I get:

Just in case there is a problem with the GUI I ran: hp-setup -i

It finds the printer (as did the GUI), appears to set it up but when I as it to print a test page I get the
same:

    error: Device busy: hp:/usb/Officejet_6700?serial=CN42KDS2JQ05RQ
error: Unable to print to printer. Please check device and try again.

SELinux is in Permissive mode - which means that it complains about things but does
not prevent things from happening.

I ran hp-check and was suggested to run hp-doctor. This tells me:

error: This distro (i.e centos 6.5) is either deprecated or not yet supported.
The diagnosis is limited on unsupported platforms. Do you want to continue?(y=yes*, n=no):

Oh, the reason that I bought the printer is because the web page below told me that it was
supported by Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 (which is what CentOS is).

    http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/officejet/officejet_6700.html

It went on to install some (mainly devel) packages and tried to confiture and ends up

    Checking for Printer Status....
error: 'Officejet_6700' Printer is either Powered-OFF or Failed to communicate.
Turn On Printer and re-run hp-doctor
error: 'Officejet_6700_fax' Printer is either Powered-OFF or Failed to communicate.

Below is the output of hp-check:

I have replied by email ... I should have added that I rebooted the system - just in case something had the device open.

This is because I was being told:
   error: Device busy: hp:/usb/Officejet_6700?serial=CN42KDS2JQ05RQ

Hi Alain,

Can you try running command "hp-doctor" in terminal and reboot your system.

Delete the exiting print queue for this printer in "system-config-printer" and reconfigure the print queue using command "hp-setup" in terminal.

After device is configured, run command "hp-levels -i -g" in terminal and provide its teminal output here.
Next, run command "hp-testpage -i -g " in terminal and provide its terminal output here.

Thanks & Rgds,
Goutam

As I said in a previous post - I have already done this.

The output of those 2 commands below.

The computer can see the printer, it is quoting a serial number ... but then
can't get much further.

Thank you for providing the output of hp-testpage -i -g and hp-levels -i -g. The output states something wrong going on in the code. We will have it debugged and provide you the solution soon.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Would you be able to give me a rough estimate as to when this might be ... my
old printer died and I cannot print at the moment. I have warned the people who
I bought it from that I have problems (not working as advertised) so they may
need to take it back - however I hope that that will not be needed.

> Sorry for the inconvenience.

It happens ... let me know if you want me to test something.

What is the point of expiring this issue - it has not been fixed.

It does not become fixed without a software fix - so expiring is silly.

Hi alain,

Sorry for the delay.
I was not able to reproduce the issue here while i was testing. Please try restarting the printer and OS.
Delete the existing print and fax queue using command 'hp-setup -r' and reconfigure the device using command 'hp-setup -i -g' in terminal and provide its output.

After the device is configure try running command 'hp-levels -i -g' in terminal and post its terminal output here.

Let me know if you are still seeing device busy error.

Rgds,
Goutam

I can no longer help you. Since the printer did not work I sent it back and got
a refund & bought a Brother printer.

However: if you look through the email trail/log you will find that I did do the
above in October and it still did not work; you also have the output that you request.
