I tried http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html

It downloaded, but stopped 2/3 of the way through installation . It
displayed the following messages:.

*There was a problem opening the file /user/downsloads/hplip-3.13.3(1).run.

The file you opened has some invalid characters. If you continue
editing this file you could corrupt
this document. You can also choose another character encoding and try
again.

Character encoding *current locale (UTFB) *

retry
edit anyway
cancel

*Any suggestions? Remember, I am an amateur at this.

Hi Douglas,

If you are opening hplip-3.13.3.run file using browser, don't open it and try following commands.

1) Open terminal and go to hplip-3.13.3.run downloaded location (Probably 2 times hplip-3.13.3.run file was downloaded so hplip-3.13.3(1).run name present.. Remove the unwanted and rename to hplip-3.13.3.run).

commands:-
$ cd /user/downloads
$ sh hplip-3.13.3.run

--> follow steps, (Details steps given in http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html)

Thanks & Regards,
Amaranth
