LaserJet 1100 not printing, not detected with HPLIP (Ubuntu 7.10)
So, I used Synaptic to download and install my HP Laserjet 1100 printer (NOT the a or any other derivative), as well as the GUI to make it easier to run.
It installed properly, but didn't print the test page, keeping on displaying "Processing" in the properties..
It didn't print a lambda page coming from OpenOffice; the last document has been sent 15 minutes ago, ad is still marked "Waiting". If I enable the printer messages, I read "The printer may not be connected".
now I tried to run "hp-setup" as root once again, but after choosing the printer's connection, the dialog box displays nothing (just the frame), and the cursor is the rolling wheel.
From the beginning, I just wanted to have all the options that were built into the Windows driver, so I went with HPLIP instead of the basic ljet4. Precisely, I wanted to be able to define a custom paper size I'm heavily using (5.5"x5,5"), which capability isn't built into the basic driver
There seems to be a connection problem between the program where the document to print is sent, and CUPS. The latter is probably working, since the printer has no trouble outputting a simple OOo file when using the ljet4 driver.
I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 on 1,6GHz P4 with 512MB DDR2100; not lightning fast, but sufficient. The parallel port sports a CanoScan N640P Canon scanner (which has problems, too - stops sending parts of the image halfway), and the Laserjet 1100 is connected on the scanner. The parallel port is configured as ECP in BIOS.
hp-check -t returns "command hp-check" is nowhere to be found" (approximately)
I really don't want to reinstall Ubuntu, since it doesn't helps me understanding the problem (neither solving it if it reappears), and heavily reminds me of irreparable Windows errors.
Where should I look for to solve the pb?

If possible remove the hplip from synaptic and install using our source located at http://
Then run hp-setup to configure the printer, and if you continue to have problems run hp-check and post the output.
Thanks!

Still, after having downloaded from here, removed the previous HPLIP installed by Synaptic, installed everything in a custom install so as to get parallel port support, then restarted, but doesn't work.
I ran hp-setup as sudo to configure the printer; it was correctly detected, but only gave the choice of installing hpijs driver, which capabilities are insufficient. I installed it anyway without changing a parameter, so I was supposed to get a test page. Nothing got out, and the data wasn't even transmitted (no blink on the printer).
In Application>
hp-check, ran as sudo, gives:
(Don't know if code tags are supported here, so I added two lines of squares to delimit the output)

I haven't missed the last lines; it keeps on running, doesn't crash or otherwise terminate, but doesn't display a printer, at least for the first 5 minutes (I let it run, just in case, but it's way too long anyway)
Now, what can I add to help solve the pb?

Has this printer ever worked on this system? Can you connect it to a windows box and see if it prints?
Also run this command and post the output:

Yes, I tried this on a previous Windows 2000 Box, and it printed flawlessly albeit a bit slow with heavy documents due to the parallel port. On Ubuntu 7.10, it worked out of the box with the basic driver (ljet4), but insufficient for what I need.
for the command 'hp', it is stated as "nowhere to be found" (approcimately)

Did you use ubuntu 7.10 on this computer or another computer? has the printer worked on this system before?
That the backend is pausing and seems to be hanging might indicate a possible parallel port problem or configuration being incorrect.

Then, plugged directly in the computer.
Ran hp-setup as sudo. The first time it failed, the second time I opened "HP Device manager", was asked to either cancel, use CUPS or HPLIP to configure the printer, I clicked on the "Use HPLIP" button, and the printer was correctly detected. However, I wanted to print a test page, but it didn't came out. In the "Device manager", under the "print control", the printer is marked as "processing", but obviously, doesn't do anything, not even a blink.
However, I cancelled the print job in HPLIP UI, and it went off the printer status applet indicator as well.
I typed "tail -f /var/log/messages"

The printer was installed using the wizard in HPLIP (equivalent of hp-setup)
I typed "sudo aa-complain cupsd" in a terminal, and read that complain mode was activated.
Then, I clicked on the "Print test page button", and the job appeared in the document print status applet, but, a few seconds after, a yellow popup "Printer HP_LaserJet_1100 may not be connected".
The printer is detected when I want to install it, but not when I want to print! Who is the culprit here?

Placed CUPS in debug moe. There was no "info" term, but "warning" one. I replaced this word with "debug", and restarted CUPS as indicated.
This is the output done when I want to print a test page from the HPLIP interface:

It freezes there, and there are no signs of improvement over the course of minutes.
Same as above, and still no output test page.

I've been looking for a LaserJet 1100 however I haven't been able to track one down yet. Unless I can aquire one we wont be able to know if this configuration will fully work. It should work, however apparently it's not. If I'm able to track one down in the future I'll update this ticket.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
Aaron
