update 7.04 to 7.10, LP 2100 doesn't work anymore

Asked by derBernie

ubuntu 7.10 standard-installation

after the update the printer doesn't work anymore and I saw no hp-toolbox anymore;
First I was looking for a solution in the verious forums then I installed hplib again (synaptic) and started hptoolbox, the printer (laserjet 2100 on the parallel port) was detected; I konfigured everything and checked everything according to http://hplip.sourceforge.net/troubleshooting/parallel.html and everything was ok but the printer prints only some words like %!PS-Adobe-3.0 ...
I checked the printer in localhost/631 and everything looks fine.

A print brings the following information in the cups error log:

D [14/Jan/2008:15:34:46 +0100] CUPS-Get-Printers

what can I do now?

Sometimes after an update there are problems. In fact I've never had any luck with an Ubuntu dist-upgrade.

Try this:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get remove hplip foomatic-db foomatic-db-hpijs gs libcupsys2 gs-esp
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get install foomatic-db foomatic-db-hpijs gs libcupsys2 gs-esp libsnmp-dev

(Notice I've added the libsnmp-dev because there is a problem with the installer after an ubuntu package name change, but this if fixed in the next release.)

Then install the latest hplip from our website; http://hplip.sf.net

Lemme know how this works out for ya.

Hi Aaron,
I had some problems with your last mail:
I did everything you wrote and afterwords the distri was damaged so I
installed the computer again and I have now a new 7.10
but the printer doesn't work
I deleted the packages and installed the latest hplip as you supposed
the system recognized the printer but it doesn't print

There is no Hp-toolbox on the system, but I was now able to run
hp-Check:
bernie@bernie-desktop:~$ hp-check

The system was damaged? What was the problem?

The hp-check is reporting that hplip was installed without parallel port support.

You'll want to re-install hplip, and select custom during the install and make sure that parallel port is enabled. More than likely this will resolve the parallel port problem.

However I'm curious what the problem was after cleaning up the files as I suggested, I've done the process several times without a negative result. All of the packages are related to printing and shouldn't harm the system in any negative way as they aren't required per se.

Hope this helps, and sorry about your previous problem!

Hi Aaron,
Thanks for your help
I installed hplip again with the installer and selected the parallel
support
the printer started to print without any command, but prints only some
signs on one piece of paper
I had to kill the job on the printer itself, because it never stopped
printing again

There is no hp-toolbox found in System

I installed libsane again, as mentioned in summeries, without anny
result
Here the new hp-check report:

seems to indicate that no printer is configured, How did you configure the printer queue? If using hplip don't use the System>Admin>Printers to configure the printer. You'll want to run hp-setup from the terminal. Also you run hp-toolbox from terminal to load the hp-toolbox.

Does adding the printer fix this?

Hi Aaron!

You asked why Bernie's system was damaged? Well i tried your command line "sudo apt-get remove hplip foomatic-db foomatic-db-hpijs gs libcupsys2 gs-esp" and it just removes half the system ;)

Sorry guys, apparently Ubuntu changed their linking for libcupsys2 and it is now indeed removing a lot of other applications along with it.

It used to not do that, and you have my most sincerely apologize for any inconvenience I caused you.

I'm glad the printer is working now.

All the best,

Aaron
