Connecting an XP machine to Ubuntu using HPLIP

Asked by Qennster

I would like to set up a file/print/Scanner server using Ubuntu as the base. There is a lot of articles about using HPLIP as the driver for my Photosmart C3180 in a mixed (Ubuntu and XP) environment, but what I want to know is if I set up the spare machine with Ubuntu and the HPLIP driver, connect the Photosmart C3180 to the server, could I scan from XP machine and what software (SANE or HP provided) should I use for the XP machine

Sorry we only provide support for HPLIP running on Linux systems. We are unable to assist with configuring xp to access a shared printer/resource. Although if you search google or some other search engine you mind find some information regarding how to do this.

All the best,

Aaron,
We are seeing this query more freqeuntly now, so, if it is not already
there, would be a good time to add it to how to/faq documentation, with a
link to Samba or one of the distos' samba documentation.

Hi,

I have an hp laserjet 1000, my problem is not knowing how to share in samba the printer, as I already did that with opensuse 10.3 and the foo2zjs driver that worked smoothly. Now in Ubuntu 10.4 I have only been able to make work the printer with your HPLIP package, which I found nice and clean, great job there. But once I publish the printer through Samba or sharing the properties through ipp, I have the same problem in the xp or vista client, they connect to the printer in both alternatives, I load the xp or vista driver needed, same that worked to the opensuse printer, they complete the installation great, but when you send a print test page it just dissappears and gives no error message, however no paper comes out.
I don know if you can help , any advice would be great.

Thanks in advance and great job for the package. Keep it up

Gonzalo
