Problem: every time I try to scan a photograph I get blocky images - like high compression jpeg images. This is using xsane, gimp, Simple Scan, and hp-scan. Adjusting compression quality levels, changing the format of the output files seems to have no effect on any of these. Have uninstalled and reinstalled xsane, HPLIP etc and still no change. Can't find any reference to this sort of behaviour on web.

Printer/scanner is connected over home network, not via USB. Printing fine. I get same behaviour from both laptop and desktop computers. Images available.

Thanks for reporting the issue in HPLIP. To help us understand and analyze the issue please follow following things.
=> Download and install the latest HPLIP release from
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html (automatic installer) or
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/index.html (manual installation, if automatic installer does not work)

=> run "hp-check --fix" command in the terminal if manual installation is done

=> Reconfigure print queue with the commands in the terminal mentioned below.
       => system-config-printer (remove all print queues)
       => hp-setup (It should not be run in a root mode. This command is adding print queue, make sure you select ppd name having "-ps" or "hpcups" substring)
=>Try printing/sanning now.

Many thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the problem is still there. In theory the attached photo was scanned at a quality of 100 using xsane, but the blocky jpeg artifacts are still there.

Are there any more tests I can do that may help?

The attched version is as it came from xsane (I cropped the previous version with Gimp). When is check it using the command

identify -verbose hpscan008.jpg

I get

So it looks like it thinks the quality level is set to 100, even if it clearly isn't.

You are still having a problem:

Many thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the problem is still there. In
theory the attached photo was scanned at a quality of 100 using xsane,
but the blocky jpeg artifacts are still there.

Scan Compression is not handled in HPLIP. It is part of the application which does the compression. As you're using xsane to scan, so the issue remains with xsane. You can create a bug in xsane.
