Install Error Message
During a reinstall of HPLIP I got the following error message:
'hpaio' in '/etc/sane.
error: Not found. SANE backend 'hpaio' NOT properly setup (needs to be added to /etc/sane.
This came as a result of doing a "hp-check"
Could you please sugest a remedy.
Secondly: Should HPLIP now show up as a driver along with CUPS etc ...
Thank you;
David

David,
To resolve the hpaio problem, edit the file
/etc/sand.
and at the bottom add "hpaio" save exit, and you should be good.
How to edit depends on your distro, you could as root/power user run:
nano /etc/sand.
and add it that way. Then Control-O (save) and Control-X (exit).
As for "show up along with CUPS" not sure what you mean. You will have the usb/cups backend and the hplip backend to select if you configure the printer using cups. However the better solution is to run hp-setup to configure the printer.
Hope this helps.

Aaron;
That fixed that error but I now have:
warning: NO (HPLIP USB I/O users must be member of 'lp' group)
note: This may not be a problem if this user will not be printing using HPLIP USB I/O.
When I go to print in DigiKam I have a choice of 4 different "Print Systems" to chose from"
1 CUPS
2 Print through external program (Generic)
3 LPR/LPRng Print System
4 LRPR Environment
I have used CUPS so far. Is this correct.
I can however see both of my HP printers ... that is a start.
Other graphics programs ar using other systems:
"ICC Plug-In" on CinePaint and GutenPrint on GIMP
It would be nice if there was some consistency on my system
My further attempt at a reinstall is in an effort to get "print Preview" to work with graphic files
Interestingly 'print preview' works fine with web docs or PDF files but fails to load with image data.
I would appreciate if you could provide further guidance.
David

Okay. The permission settings have changed since 2.7.7. If possible please upgrade to 2.7.12.
This will most likely resolve this.

Aaron;
A couple of things:
1. After installing the latest version I finished up with the downloaded tar file plus a locked hplip-2.7.12 folder on my desktop. The downloaded file was easy to trash but the other, ( that I assume is a temp folder ) appears unmovable. How can I delete or even just hide it?
2. Some better news: I decided to put the KDE desktop onto my system for alternate usage. Without using KDE my 'Print Preview' now works. Great relief!

Sometimes if the installer is ran as root it will create a folder with the incorrect permissions, you can delete it by running
chmod 777 hplip-2.7.12
then
rm -rf hplip-2.7.12
Course you have to be in the directory where the directory is at, if that makes sense.
Glad everything else is working!
All the best,

Aaron;
The "sudo chmod 777 hplip-2.7.12" appears to allow permission only to that folder which I can now open
However all of the sub-folders are still locked and "rm -rf hplip-2.7.12" just sends back a list of denied permissions.
I can now drag it into the trash ... but then the trash is locked up
Is there a command that will fry all of the subfolder permissions and any protected files en-mass?

Shoot I'm sorry.
That should be.
sudo chmod -R 777 hplip-2.7.12.
Sorry about that I forgot the recursive bit.
If it's in the trash you can run something like
sudo chmod -R 777 ~/.Trash
and that should change the permissions of all the files in the trash to 777, etc.
