hplip3.12.6 LMDE-1 installs no errors test page garbage text

Asked by G. D. Young

I've installed the package using hplip-3.12.6.run, auto, and aside from the warning that it's not compatible with Linus Mint Debian Edition 1, installs without errors. Using the system tray status service button, or the same manager just at end of install, requesting a test page gets many dozens of black text output pages (it begins with a header that says:
%PDF-1.3
%1234
% This file was generated by pdftopdf
... )

Printing a one-page text file with the editor gives the same output.

Printer is CP1025nw, wired network connection.

On opening the 'printing' item in settings, selecting the 'properties' results in an error message "Option 'printer-resolution' has value '(unknown IPP tag)' and cannot be edited." This message was present before d/l the hplip 3.12.6 install, and it's still present

Hi,

Thanks for reporting the issue in HPLIP. To help us understand and analyze the issue please follow following things.
=> Download and install the latest HPLIP release from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html (automatic) or http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/index.html (manual if automatic does not work)

=> Reconfigure print queue with the commands in the terminal mentioned below.
=> system-config-printer (remove all print queues)
=> su -c "hp-plugin" (This will download right plugin)
=> hp-setup (It should not be run in a root mode. This command is adding print queue, make sure you select ppd name having "-ps" or "hpcups" substring)
=>Try printing now.

If problem does not get solved then please run following command to capture the logs and send the logs.

$su -c "hp-logcapture"

**Please use "Create a bug report" to attach the logs as "Ask a Question" does not provide the file attachment option

Sorry for the scattering of the pieces of observations--I can't seem to get
them all written down together at the same time. I forgot to mention the
following when I posted the log files as bug report 1048841:

With regard to the install of the 3.12.9 version, I followed the steps
below, but while in hp-setup the program auto-selects the PPD file as
"lsb/usr/HP/hp-laserjet_cp1025nw-hpijs.ppd.gz" Searching the list of PPD
files, there is no name available with "-ps" or "hpcups" in the name (that
also has the cp1025nw printer model).

I followed the alternate suggestion 'manual' procedure mentioned, and the
hp-setup is now able to find a ppd with "hpcups" in the name, and the
install results in the cp1025nw printer working properly.

However, the parallel-port connected printer (an older HP laserjet 6L) does
not work, and hp-setup has the parallel-port discovery option greyed out.
Using the admin-printing option to add the parallel port printer seems to
succeed, I can select various .ppd files and I've tried most of them, the
one with hpcups 3.12.9 seems best, but printing a test page yields about
80% of the proper "printer test page" the remainder is cut off in the
middle of a line of text. Thereafter the printer doesn't do anything when
any application's 'file, print' command is given.

Hi,

Parallel port support has been removed from HPLIP as it is no more present in HP devices released in last few years. However you can enable this and give it a try using following commands.
1) Download auto-installer file (hplip-3.12.9.run) to some location. e.g ~/Download
2) run autoinstaller as follows and then press q in the first prompt(This will only extract the source code).
       $sh hplip-3.12.9.run
3) hplip-3.12.9 directory will be created in ~/Downloads directory
4) Open terminal and change directory to ~/Download/hplip-3.12.9
5) Now run following 3 commands
      a) ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-pp-build (for 32 bit OS)
         ./configure --prefix=/usr --libdir=/usr/lib64 --enable-pp-build (for 64bit OS)
      b) make
      c) su -c "make install"
6) Now setup the printer using following command and then try printing
hp-setup (Then select parallel port option)

OK, that all worked just fine. Now both printers are working correctly. Thank you very kindly for all the assistance.
