Asked by atomik

I have an hp laserjet 3600 and I see that there's "optional" plugins for it.

Install the printer using hp-setup and it will automatically download and
install the plugin.

Try unplugging the printer, plug it back in, run hp-setup -g

and post the log, which will be rather long.

Thanks!

I'll need to try and reproduce this, however because of the Holiday I don't have access to a LJ3600. I'll try and reproduce and get more info to you after the new year.

Sorry for the delay!

I haven't been able to reproduce this, if you disconnect the printer, remove and delete all the printer queues, plug the printer in and run hp-setup you still have problems?

Thanks!

If you have already downloaded the 3600 plugin then you will not be prompted to download the plugin again. It will use your existing plugin files to install any new printer of that type.

Try this...NOTE - if you run more than one printer that require plugins, do not do this procedure.

1. Remove Firmware files
# cd /usr/share/hplip/data/firmware
# rm <yourprinter>.fw.gz

2. Remove Your Plugin and plugins.conf
# cd /usr/share/hplip/data/plugins
# rm plugins.conf
# rm <yourprinter>.plugin
# rm <yourprinter>-plugin.version

3. Remove .so files
# cd /usr/share/hplip/prnt/plugins
# rm lj-x86.so
# rm lj-x86_64.so
# rm -f lj.so

This effectively has removed all plugins from your setup. Run

# hp-setup

and you should be starting over.

in the above I forgot to mention, before hp-setup, remove any other printer queue's from cups that used the old/removed plugins.

Ok thanks for these info, now I've installed the plugin etc, but when I want to print something I see on the LCD panel "chosen personality not available". What does it means ?

Does this happen when you print from anything? or just a certain document? From what i'm reading this error generally (for some reason) means that the printer firmware needs to be updated. Least that seems to be the resolution in several cases. Although it doesn't exactly make sense to me if it was working and then not, and updating the firmware fixes it.

So lets try printing something else, from a different application and see if you get the same result.

If it doesn't happen it could be something wrong with the document you are printing. Maybe the margins are outside the printable error, etc.

If it does then we could try updating the firmware:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=501045&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=501044&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=54

Although you'll need a windows system to complete the update. Also you could try printing on windows and see if you get the same result.

I'm assuming you've tried power cycling the printer?

Hope this helps.

it works well without the plugin (when I use the "normal" ppd), if I use the ppd that require the plugin it doesn't print (test page in cups, simple text file,...etc).
So the problem is ONLY with the plugin (a bug ?)

I've upgraded the firmware on linux (cat firmware > /dev/usb/lp0 and It works but it was the same version on HP website and on the printer) So I think It could be a bug in the driver or plugin ?

We've been able to reproduce this. We are going to disable support for the 3600 with the plugin. For now if printing via the ppd works that will be the correct method to configure the printer. If we are able to aquire a printer in the future this may change.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Aaron
