HPLIP no longer works for Officejet Pro 8600

I have gNewSense 2.3 which is based on Ubuntu 8.04.
I purchased an Officejet Pro 8600 (printer, scanner, fax)
At that time I installed HPLIP version 3.11.10 and at the time it detected the Officejet and the HP Device Manager indicated all 3 functions. Additionally, I could fax, print, and scan from my laptop. Then later the Device Manager started indicating the error message "ERROR: no device found or unsupported device. I could no longer scan or fax but I could still print.

I tried reinstalling HPLIP with no success. I cannot think of any installation or removal that I did that would affect this.

Cannot anyone advise on what to do?

Can you please try with latest HPLIP 3.12.6 release? You can download the latest HPLIP from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/gethplip.html. Installation instructions can also be found in the same page.

You can try installing. It may claim auto installation not supported. But still continue with installation, it will work.

I tried the automatic install of 3.12.6 release and I got the following messages:

warning: There are 1 missing REQUIRED dependencies.
note: Installation of dependencies requires an active internet connection.
warning: Missing REQUIRED dependency: libusb (libusb - USB library)
warning: This installer cannot install 'libusb' for your distro/OS and/or version.
error: Installation cannot continue without this dependency. Please manually install this dependency and re-run this installer.

I had libusb-0.1.4 on the laptop but tried manually installing version 0.1.8 and 1.0.9 and go the same messages. libusb-dev is also installed.

Please advise and what exactly needs to be installed for libusb?

I performed the manual install process and it worked. I have all the functions now.

Seems there is a bug in your automatic installer.
