Hi,
Thanks for reporting the issue in HPLIP. Can you do following things.
1)Run in terminal : $ lsusb
2) Now Run in teminal : $ lsusb -d 03f0:002a -v
If bMumInterfaces = 1, then smart install feature has been enabled. If this is enabled, your device will be detected as CDRom from where you can install the software on windows. Unfortunately we don't support this feature in Linux as of now. If you disable this feature on device, your device will be detected in Linux. To disable this you should have a windows machine and can follow the below steps.
1. Download the Full Driver for Windows from www.hp.com
2. Run the exe, extract it to a folder.
3. Go to extracted folder/UTIL directory
4. Connect your device.
5. Run SIUtility.exe and follow the wizard to disable the feature.

Thank you for your help which fixed the problem. The problem is that
although I can now print the scanner function is not recognized by the
driver. Any ideas??
Thanks
David

Thank you for your reply--I have used hp-setup. Xsane claims that no
device is available. HP-toolbox finds the printer and fax but for
scanner says "unable to open hpaio/usb/HP..." device not supported.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi David,
Can you try following things.
=> Download and install the latest HPLIP release from http://
=> Reconfigure print queue with the commands in the terminal mentioned below.
=> system-
=> su -c "hp-plugin" (This will download right plugin)
=> hp-setup (It should not be run in a root mode. This command is adding print queue, make sure you select ppd name having "-ps" or "hpcups" substring)
=>Execute following commands in terminal in root mode.
=> cat /dev/null > /var/log/messages
=> cat /dev/null > /var/log/syslog
=> hp-check -t > /tmp/hpcheck.log
=>Try scanning now with the following command
hp-toolbox -g > /tmp/hptoolbox.log
If scanning still fails then please paste following files contents here.
1) /var/log/messages
2) /var/log/syslog
3) /tmp/hpcheck.log
4) /tmp/hptoolbox.log

Still no scanning.
When I try
cat /dev/null > /var/log/messages
=> cat /dev/null > /var/log/syslog
I receive an error message that permission denied despite running in root mode.
/var/log/syslog

Hello David,
From the logs it looks that lp and lpadmin groups are missing for the current user. Please run following command and then reboot the PC to fix the problem.

If steps mentioed above also dont work then please re-configure print queue with the commands in the terminal mentioned below.
=> system-
=> su -c "hp-plugin" (This will download right plugin)
=> hp-setup (It should not be run in a root mode. This command is adding print queue, make sure you select ppd name having "-ps" or "hpcups" substring)

Thanks for your patience. I tried all the steps you suggested but still
no luck. The printer function works perfectly--the xsane or sane says
that there is no device available. The hp-setup also claims that no
scanner is present. I know the scanner can work with hplip because it
worked fine in mint 12. Only when I converted to mint 13 was there a
problem. The copy function works fine on the printer itself so the
scanning function works independently of the driver.
I am not sure what you mean when you suggested
hp-setup (It should not be run in a root mode. This command is adding print queue, make sure you select ppd name having "-ps" or "hpcups" substring) . I only have one choice.
Any other ideas as to what I can do?

Hi David,
I think, above message was just warning and this mayn't be a problem.
You can fix this warning message by removing "qt-at-spi" package.
$ sudo apt-get -y remove --purge qt-at-spi
Can you check whether scan is detecting or not by running following command.
$ scanimage -L
or
$ sane-find-scanner -v
Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

Thank you for your response. After running scanimage -L I get the
following message
"No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate)."
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers,
David

Hi David,
If hp Device ( laserjet M1217nfw) is connected using USB, this must detect scanner.
try "sane-find-scanner -v " command,
this command may give so many warnings but if output contains "found USB Scanner" message, it is detecting scanner correctly.
If "found USB Scanner" not found, somehow basic scanner itself is not detecting. May be some other issue (i.e. hardware or other).
To work hplip scan functionality scanner must be detected.
if possible, can you please check will it work using network. if it is not working using network also, send us "hp-scan -g" output.
Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

Running sane-find-scanner -v I get

found USB scanner (vendor=0x138a, product=0x0018) at libusb:001:003
# Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
# SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.
# Not checking for parallel port scanners.

done
then scanimage -L
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
the printer works fine as a printer and can copy documents via the hardware buttton.

Hi Amarnath--I hooked the printer to a computer running windows XP and
it scanned a document perfectly. Therefore it must be a problem with the
HP linux driver and not a hardware problem.
Any ideas on how I should proceed. I could try to install earlier .4
driver.
Cheers,
David

Hi David,
Sane-find-scanner is detecting scanner but scanimage is not detecting the scanner. Can you please try following
1) check 'hpaio' entry present '/etc/sane.
--> If this 'hpaio' keyword is not present or commented (starting with #), add 'hpaio' as a separate line.
2) Try to add following line in /etc/sane.d/hp.conf file
usb 0x03f0 0x0e2a
Restart system and check if scanner is detecting?
Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath
