Very Slow printing on HP Deskjet 5940 in PCLinuxOS

Asked by Matthew Davies

I have a HP Deskjet 5940 printer connected to my PC via USB port. I am trying to get it to work properly in PCLinuxOS. Quality of prints is very good, but printing photos is painfully slow from any application. Text printing works at a normal speed - the same as Windows.
When a photo print job is sent, the printer does nothing for about 5 minutes, then pauses for about 2 minutes every minute.

I have HPLIP / HPIJS / foomatic installed.

Can anyone help me to speed up my printing?

Can you run hp-check and post the output?

Are you using any usb hubs?

Thanks.

I have a USB hub, but the printer is not plugged into it. The printer is plugged directly into one of my computer's USB ports.

Below is the output of hp-check.

Thanks for the response. Let me know if you need more information.

Did you install hplip or are you using what came with pclinuxos?

If you are using what came with pclinuxos is it possible to try and install the latest release from http://hplip.sf.net ?

You are missing a bunch of dependencies, specifically regarding usb support so this may be part of the problem.

I was using what came with PCLinuxOS.

I downloaded the tarball for the latest release, extracted it, then tried to install, first with ./configure, then with ./hplip-install.

It didn't work...the output is below, with an error right at the end. I hope you know what it means. I'm a bit new to this stuff so it makes no sense to me.

Thanks for the help.

I reinstalled the printer, and installed a PPD file from HP's web site (hpijs driver). The printer seems to be a bit faster now, but still waits a long time before starting.

When I run hp-check, this is what I get now (looks better)

The printer is configured using the usb:// backend:

Device URI: usb://HP/Deskjet%205900%20series?serial=CN65M1T18204KF

The ./configure seemed to complete okay. Then run

make
su
make install
hp-setup

and see if the setup can configure the printer and if it works better.

I did that and now the printer will not do anything. I also removed it and reinstalled via the PCLOS control center (which usually works) and it still does not work.

I reinstalled HPLIP. When I send something to the printer, I get a job listed in KJobviewer. The job always says "processing".

Probably the best way to proceed is to put CUPS into debug mode and to take
a look at the error log. Instructions are here:

http://hplip.sourceforge.net/troubleshooting/printing.html

Issue #2.

Make sure you clear out your queue with lprm first so that new jobs will get
processed. Then, post the log here.

This is the error_log file when I try to print a very simple text document.

KJobviewer lists the job as "processing" but nothing ever happens.

Thanks for your help.

I also noticed in this log file, it says "deskjet 5600", whereas my printer is a deskjet 5940 (and I set it up as a 5940 in linux). Not sure if this is a problem?

Sorry for the delay.

Okay I think I know what's going on. PCLinuxOS is based on Mandriva. Although we thought we had the Mandriva permissions worked out awhile ago we still have a problem with them. We are going to be working on hopefully fixing this in the next release. Regardless this also effects PCLinuxOS as well.

Run:

su -c "kwrite /etc/cups/cupsd.conf"

Change: "Group sys" to "Group lp"

Save, Exit

Then run:

su -c "kwrite /etc/security/console.perms.d/50-mandriva.perms"

Change the line:

<usb>=/dev/usb/dabusb* ...... (where ..... is a lot more text, but it should all be on one line, which may wrap.)

to

#<usb>=/dev/usb/dabusb* ........

Add the line:

<usb>=/dev/usb/dabusb* /dev/usb/mdc800* /dev/usb/rio500 /dev/ttyUSB*

Save, Exit.

Disconnect the printer, and reconnect it.

Try to print. If you continue problems delete the queue and re-add the printer using hp-setup.

Also make sure than all past jobs are removed.

If this doesn't work, update this thread. Although it -should- fix it.

Thanks AA, you're a genius. My printer is now working with documents. I haven't tried printing photos yet but will try it later today and let you know how it goes.

Can you explain to me in simple terms what the above commands are doing?

Revision history for this message
Aaron Albright (albrigha-deactivatedaccount) said :

It has to do with the permissions on the usb port and the primary printing group in cups. (Cupsd.conf) The mandriva usb security is more restrictive than what works best for hplip. Although other distros don't have this problem anymore so I'm not sure exactly the reasoning for mandriva using this security. But we got it working, so that's good. :)

All the best!

Tried printing some photos - works pretty well but I think it's still a little bit slower than in windows and there are some annoying pauses in the middle of each page.
