Hi,
Thanks for reporting the issue in HPLIP. To help us understand and analyze the issue please follow following things.
=> Download and install the latest HPLIP release from http://
or http://
=> Reconfigure print queue with the commands in the terminal mentioned below.
=> system-
=> su -c "hp-plugin" (This will download right plugin)
=> hp-setup (It should not be run in a root mode. This command is adding print queue, make sure you select ppd name having "-ps" or "hpcups" substring)
=>Try printing now.
If problem does not get solved then please capture some logs by doing following things.
=>Enable/Clear Logs as mentioned below
a) Enable Log capture
=> su (switch to root mode here and execute all remaing commands in root mode)
=> open /etc/cups/
LogLevel warn
LogLevel debug
hpLogLevel 15
b) Open Terminal and run following commands:
=> su (switch to root mode here and execute all remaing commands in root mode)

=> cat /dev/null > /var/log/
=> cat /dev/null > /var/log/messages
=> cat /dev/null > /var/log/syslog
=> hp-check -t > /tmp/hpcheck.log
c) Try to print the file. If issue is not resolved then please send following files
(**Please use "Create a bug report" to attach the logs as "Ask a Question" does not provide the file attachment option)
=> /var/log/syslog (if present),
=> /var/log/messages (if present),
=> /var/log/
=> /tmp/*.bmp
=> /tmp/*.out
=> /tmp/hpcheck.log

I tried this and it still does not print to the photo paper tray, from
my Ubuntu 12.04 computer.
If I put a photo in the scanner, the 6510e will scan the photo and print
it on the photo paper
in the photo paper tray.

Hello Brian,
Thanks for the logs. Can you add 2 more lines in /etc/cups/
*InputSlot Auto/Auto-Select: "<</MediaPosition 7>>setpagedevice"
Add these two lines.
*InputSlot PhotoTray/Photo Tray: "<</MediaPosition 6>>setpagedevice"
*InputSlot MainTray/Main Tray: "<</MediaPosition 1>>setpagedevice"
Now try to print.
Thanks,
Sanjay

Sanjay,
I made the changes to the /etc/cups/
as you suggested.
After selecting to print a photo in the page setup, I now have the following choices under
Paper source:
If I select Photo Tray and print the photo IT DOES PRINT to the Photo Tray !!!!
Very nice, Thank You.
Just some other info you may like to know:
*************
If I select Auto Select, it does not print to the photo tray, it prints to the main tray.
When I do print a photo under the Paper type: I only have the following 2 choices.
Paper type:
If I select Paper source: as Photo Tray, and Paper size: as Borderless Photo 4x6in
I still do not have other choices for the Paper Type: (it still only has Plain Paper and Transparency Film).
But if I do a Print Preview and then close out the Print Preview window.
Then if I go back and select print again......From the photo application ( in this case I am using Shotwell, but I believe the results are the same for print from all applications ).
Then under Page Setup and to the right of the Paper Type: drop down list there is the Red Circle Exclamation mark Icon (Some of the settings in the dialog conflict)
And Now I have the following 2 choices in the
Paper type:
It seems to me that under the Paper type: you should always have the choice for all 3 types:
Paper type:
Plain Paper
Photo Paper
Transparency Film
because someone could be printing an 8 x 10 photo on to a large letter size photo paper.
From that point on, I when I go to print any document (photo or regular full page document)
from any application, then I continue to have the above 3 choices for Paper type:
Until I reboot the system, then when I go to print again, I have to go through the steps above
under the "*************" one time to have the Photo Paper choice under Paper type:
However I am not sure if the selection in the Paper type: drop down list has any true affect on the
actually printing ????
Thank you very much.
