I can't access scanner function using Linux Mint 11 with my HP Officejet 4500

Asked by Tom Wyatt

When I try to scan a document with my HP Officejet 4500 it tells me that "there are no scanner options", the thing prints ok using the driver that came with Mint 11 but there does not appear to be any software that communicates with the scanner function of this "all in one" device.

When I get to step 3 on the process and enter the command to access the tarball I get the following reply in Terminal
tom@tom-desktop ~/Desktop $ tar xvfz hplip-3.12.4.tar.gz
tar: hplip-3.12.4.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
I don't know where to go from there I have the hplip-3.12-4 file on the download folder and I keep getting the same error message.
