Linux support (Suse 11.4) for HP laserjet pro p1102

Asked by Michael Papworth

I am running Suse 11.4 on my PC. I am looking for a monochrome laser printer. After much frustration with trying to get a Canon 9600 and then a FujiXerox p205b to be recognised by the computer, I have come to the HP knowledge base. From my searching the internet, it appears to me that HP offers the most extensive support for Linux systems. A HPLaserJet Pro p1102 black and white printer is on sale locally, but I cannot find its ID on the database. My guess is this is because it is a newer model. My question is - Is there Linux support for this HP printer?

Hi Michael,

We do support HP LaserJet Pro P1102 device on Linux. Please find the latest version of HPLIP at http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/gethplip.html . Installation instructions can also be found in the same page.

Thanks and Regards,
Srikanth Lokare

Many thanks Srikanth. I downloaded HPLIP version 3.11.12 and installed it according to the instructions. The HP LaserJet P1102w is now operational. Celebration dinner tonight!

Kind regards

I am not able to complete the installationprocess of my Laserjet P1102. The printer is switched on and connected by usb cable. It is "seen" by my system as you can see below:

Looking to cups with my browser at http://127.0.0.1:631/printers/ gives an output you can see at http://michkloo.home.xs4all.nl/cups.html

At the moment I consider bringing the printer back to the shop. But of course I'd rather get it working. Thanks for your help!

Hi Julien,

Please check whether print queue is disable?
--> open "system-config-printer" and do rightclick on printer, check if it not enable, enable and try.

Also post here "hp-check" command and "lsusb -d 03f0:002a" commands output.

Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

Thank you for your reply, Amarnath. Sorry for my late reply: I have
been too busy to answer you earlier, and only read your posting
this morning.

Your first suggestion ("open "system-config-printer" and do rightclick
on printer")
I do not recognize "open "system-config-printer". This might be a MS-Windows
command that is not available on a linux system (mine is Suse 12.1)

I'm hesitant to post the 130 lines-output of hp-check, and prefer to only
post the problems:

error: Failed to install 'reportlab' package, please install manually.
Appearently the hplip-3.12.6 does not contain this routine. but I
suppose this is not a serious issue. I read it is used only for fax
coverpage
generation, and no fax is connectd to this machine.

More seriously:
error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12):
hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_Professional_P1102?serial=000000000Q838SP7PR1a
error: Device not found
error: Communication status: Failed

However, the lsusb command shows the device on the 8th line
(Bus 002 Device 006):

lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 006: ID 03f0:002a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet P1102
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 152d:2336 JMicron Technology Corp. / JMicron USA
Technology Corp. Hard Disk Drive
Bus 006 Device 002: ID 0603:00f2 Novatek Microelectronics Corp.
Bus 006 Device 003: ID 046d:c05b Logitech, Inc.

The other lsusb-command you requested:

lsusb -d 03f0:002a
Bus 002 Device 006: ID 03f0:002a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet P1102

And that's it. Thank you so much for trying to help me out.

Best regards
Julien
