HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 A910 not printing w/ 3.11.7

Asked by johnherron

Hi, all.

Using a standalone box w/ Ubuntu 11.04 preloaded, Intel i5, 4GB RAM.

The system sees my usb-connected HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 A910 as set up properly (see output of hp-check -t at http://pastebin.com/r98H55Gi) and fitted with nearly full ink cartridges.

The printer, now apparently in standby mode (power switch on but slowly fading in and out), does not respond to any print commands from LibreOffice (under CUPS) or from HP Device Manager (for .pdf files).

Would appreciate any suggestions on how to remedy this situation.

TIA

john

Hi,

Thanks for reporting the bug in HPLIP. To help us understand and analyze the issue please follow following things.

    a)Open /etc/cups/cupsd.conf in root mode and replace

        LogLevel warn

          with

       LogLevel debug
       hpLogLevel 15

    b) Open Terminal and run following commands:
       => su
       => /etc/init.d/cups restart
                  or
       => service cups restart
       => cd /tmp
       => rm *.out
       => rm *.bmp
       => cat dev/null > /var/log/cups/error_log
       => hp-check -t > /tmp/hpcheck.log

    c) Try to print the file and then send
          => /var/log/syslog (if present),
          => /var/log/messages (if present),
          => /var/log/cups/error_log
          => /tmp/*.bmp
          => /tmp/*.out
          => /tmp/hpcheck.log
          => document used for printing

Hello, Sanjay.

I followed your instructions, but the printer did not react at all.
The document I tried to print after issuing the terminal commands was an
earlier version of hp-check.log

Also tried to scan some documents from the document feeder directly to
an UBS stick.
This also had always worked in the past, but not today...

Even after implementing your suggestions, the printer seems 'dead'
except for the wifi and power-switch lights, which ebb and flow.

Should i perhaps try to uninstall hplip-3.11.7 (how?) and reinstall the
printer as new under the same version of
hplip or under the more recent 3.11.10 version?

i'm uploading two of the files you requested (syslog.08122011 and
hpchecklog.08122011) to _pastebin.com_. For some obscure reason,
error_log was not accepted by pastebin. Also, I was unable to post the
two .bmp files (hpcupsfilterc_1 and hpcupsfilterk_1)
to a site like imagebin because they wouldn't accept .bmp files.
I tried to physically attach all of these files to the original mailing
of this message, but the attachments did not make it through to you;
there was a no-reply message from you that mentioned some errors in transit.

At any rate, thanks for helping.
john

Hi,

Please paste the output of "hp-check -t" command here. I couldn't find the same at http://pastebin.com/r98H55Gi
Please try these below steps and provide us the logs.

To analyse this issue please follow the below steps to provide us some logs.

1.Open the file /etc/cups/cupsd.conf in write permissions.
$su -c "gedit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf"
 Change LogLevel warn to LogLevel debug and below that line add hpLogLevel 15.

2. Restart the cups
$su -c "/etc/init.d/cups restart"

3.make the log file empty
$su -c "cat /dev/null > /var/log/syslog"
$su -c "cat /dev/null > /var/log/cups/error_log"

4. Send a print job or print a test page.

5. Copy the contents of syslog file.
$su -c "cat /var/log/syslog > debug.txt"
$su -c "cat /var/log/cups/error_log > cups_log.txt"

Attach me the debug.txt & cups_log.txt files.

6. In /tmp folder you will find files with name starting with hpcups like, hpcupsfilterc_1.bmp, hpcupsfilterk_1. bmp, hpcups_jobX.out.

Can you please attach those files.
(In Questions there is no option to upload the attachments)
Click on the link below it will ask you "summary of the bug" then click next, at the bottom you will see "No i want to report a new bug". click on that and then again at the bottom you will find "extra options" click on that finally at the end you will see a place to upload your attachements.
