HP LaserJet P1102w install plug-in failed & no system tray

Asked by Daisy Bachmann

After installing hplip-3.11.7 for HP LaserJet P1102w on openSuSE11.2, required plug-in download failed but can print after rebooting. However, I inadvertantly moved the extracted hplip-3.11.7 folder from Desktop and a "no system tray detected" message appeared at next start up even after I moved the folder back to Desktop. Cannot continue boot if I do not click OK to system tray message. Running the downloaded hplip-3.11.7.run again did not rectify the problem. I am a total newbie to linux. please help. Thanks

Hi,

  Please download hpilp-3.11.7 from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html and install it in commandine by typing 'sh hplip-3.11.7.run'.

 Download the plugin from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/plugin_download.html and install it using 'su -c "hplip-3.11.7-plugin.run" '.

Connect the printer via USB and run "hp-setup". After setup is complete, you can print.

Let us know if you are facing any issue.

Thanks,
Sarbeswar Meher

Hi Sarbeswar

Thanks very much for your help. Its printing now but I still get the message on startup that "No system tray
is detected. Exiting". This is a bit of a nuisance because the startup will not proceed until I click 'OK'
meaning I have to sit in front of the monitor until that's clicked.

Also because hplip-3.11.7 was installed previously, the printer is still listed (name containing underscores
instead of hyphens). Is there any way of deleting the previously detected printer or both will work?

Sorry to be asking pedantic questions. I am truly grateful for any assistance you can give me.

Regards
Daisy

In the commandline, run "system-config-printer". Delete all the existing print queues. Open "hp-toolbox" and it should not display any item. Click on the (+) icon to add a new queue.

Hope this help.

I am not familiar with commandline. Where would "system-config-printer" be to list "hp-toolbox"" Would
deleter earlier instance of printer bring back the system tray referenced in the message box on startup?

Thank you

daisy@linux-65k3:~> cnf system-config-printer

The program 'system-config-printer' can be found in following packages:
  * system-config-printer [ path: /usr/bin/system-config-printer, repository: zypp (rpm-md) ]
  * system-config-printer [ path: /usr/bin/system-config-printer, repository: zypp (repo-source) ]

Try installing with:
    sudo zypper install system-config-printer

Do I need to install system-config-printer? will it remove the "HPLIP Status Service no system tray
detected. Unable to start. Exiting" error message on startup?

Thankyou
Daisy Bachmann

I have been able to download the driver and therefore can print. However, the issue of "HP systray not detected in system" has not been resolved. Kill PID was unsuccessful. I have not upgraded to hplip 11.3.10 as I am on openSuSE11.2 and have no intention of upgrading. Therefore do not want to risk not being able to print. Would appreciate any input as to how to get rid of the login error message re hp-systray. Its an annoyance issue rather than anything else.
Thanks very much for help received so far.

Hi Daisy,

Please try following steps to remove the systray error during login time.

1) open "Control Center"--> "Start Applications"
2) you can find "HP System Tray Service". click this and select "Remove".
3) Restart PC
------------------------
To add again to systray again.
1) open "Computer"--> search for "Terminal". select either "GNOME terminal" or "KDE terminal".
2) open terminal opens type following command.
==> which 'hp-systray'
==> displays path.
3) open "Control Center"--> "Start Applications". select "Add"
enter "Name" as "HP System Tray Service"
enter "command" as "==> displayed path. from step 2)"
enter "comment" as "HP System Tray Service"
select Add.
