can print, but device manager says "no installed hp devices found"
Hi,
I'm running debian unstable, and after a routine upgrade today the hp device manger no longer works. The upgrade gave me the 1.6.10-4.3 version of hplip. I can print, but I can no longer scan (hp sendfax never worked). When I open the device manager, I get this message: "no installed hp devices found." I tried installing the printer (an officejet 7310xi) with the device manager, but i get the same message. I've tried reinstalling the officejet with cups, and I can print a test page, but the device manager still tells me that no devices are installed.

Please post the output of 'hp-check -t'

hp-check -t just results in a "command not found" for both root and normal user. I have hplip, hplip-data, and hplip-dbg installed. Perhaps debian doesn't include the package with hp-check?

It's highly possible. The distros like to install only the parts of many projects that they feel are needed. You may want to install hplip released from our website, or you can try installing the printer using debian documentation.
Although please keep in mind that we don't support distro specific packages per se, because we don't know what was changed/modified exactly.
If possible install from our website--it will most likely resolve your concern.

Hi Aaron,
I purged the debian hplip package from my system, and then tried the 2.7.10 hplip self-extracting installer from your website, which I ran in custom mode. HP setup correctly detects my printer on my wireless network, and asks me to choose a ppd file, which I do. But the setup then fails with "Printer queue setup failed. Please restart cups and try again." I restart cups, but get the same error message. Here is the result of hp-check -t:

It looks like sip isn't installed, try installing python-sip4 and python-sip4-dev. Although the cups error indicates there may be a cups problem, you could try setting cups to debug mode and looking at the log to see what the specific error is. How do to that is here..
See step 2:
http://
After you are looking at the cups log try and setup the printer again and post the error.
Hope this helps!

Hi Aaron,
Python-sip4 and python-sip4-dev are both already installed. I set cups to debug mode and tried setting up the printer. I get the same "printer queue setup failed" message, but strangely enough a test page successfully prints when I exit the setup. And I can print and scan generally; pc faxing has never worked for me with any version of hplip, and still doesn't. The HP device manager still says "no installed hp devices found."

I know this may seem redundant but if you can post hp-check -t again. if it's printing and scanning but now showing up in the toolbox that's interesting. usually that would indicate that the printer isn't using the hp-backend. You configured the printing using hp-setup?

If possible lets try deleting the cups queue and running hp-setup to configure the printer and then we'll troubleshoot it from that configuration. After using hp-setup and installing xsane still not printing or scanning?

Before trying your suggestion of deleting the cups queue, I just wanted to point out that I can can and print now; it's just that the hp device manager interface gives me the error message of "no installed hp devices found." Nevertheless, I can print and scan. But I'll plunge ahead and delete the cups queue, and try hp-setup. I'll follow-up with this message in a few minutes, so you don't have to reply to this one.

Well if you can print and scan and want to leave it at that it's fine. If you want to use the toolbox we'll need to troubleshoot more. Although actually lets not remove cups and just try running hp-setup instead.

Darn. I reinstalled hplip (first I did make uninstall with my previous installation), and ran hp-setup, but I get the same error messages, and of course now I can't print or scan because there's nothing in the cups queue. Could it be that hplip has problems setting up a printer on a wireless network? Here's the output from hp-setup and hp-check -t:

No hp-setup works with wifi printers.
Can you run 'hp-setup -g' and post the lines around the error? about 50 or so should be fine.
Also run 'updatedb' and then locate 'OfficeJet_7300' and post the output of that as well.

You are running debian lenny? Something odd is going on.
Can you try configuring the printer using the hp:/ backend in CUPS manually? and confirm your distro/version and I'll try to reproduce.

Hi Aaron,
I'm using debian sid, fully up to date (I just did a dist-upgrade a couple of days ago, which is when my problems with hplip started.)
I just used cups to configure the printer, and printed a test page. Scanning works, too, but the hp device manager still tells me that no devices are installed.

Okay I understand now. We probably wont ever fully support sid because it's unstable (very much so) and it's not an actual debian release per se.
http://
And because this started after your last update you may want to post to a debian forum. Although I haven't tested it myself yet, I've been told that hplip should work on debian lenny (testing). I know that doesn't help much and sorry I couldn't help more.

Thanks for trying, Aaron. Hplip had been working (except for pc fax send) until I upgraded, so it probably is a sid issue. I'm clicking on "I still need an answer" but you don't need to reply again.
