New Fedora install - root can see, user cannot

Asked by derekw

I had been successfully using my HP Photosmart C4480 with HPLIP on a Mandriva system for a couple years.

I then performed a fresh new install of Fedora 15 on the system. I downloaded and run the hplip-3.11.5.run installation package. It didn't work at first because it said I needed some dependencies. I managed to figure out which dependencies those were and got them installed. Finally I completed the installation of the HPLIP software.

After the install, HPLIP did manage to detect my Photosmart but it said there was a communication error. I found the command-line utilities and soon learned that the root user is able to "see" the printer but the normal user cannot.

As root, the hp-probe command reports this:

--------------------
| DEVICE DISCOVERY |
--------------------

  Device URI Model
  ----------------------------------------------------- --------------------------
  hp:/usb/Photosmart_C4400_series?serial=CN878HG0DW0557 HP Photosmart C4400 series

Found 1 printer(s) on the 'usb' bus.

But as normal user, it reports this:
--------------------
| DEVICE DISCOVERY |
--------------------

warning: No devices found on the 'usb' bus. If this isn't the result you are expecting,
warning: check to make sure your devices are properly connected and powered on.

I'm not sure if this is a USB permissions issue, but the installation is really a basic, stock, clean Fedora 15. So I haven't (knowingly) made any mods that should have affected it.

I then ran the hp-check utility which reported this:
[shamrock@ben Downloads]$ hp-check

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the
proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied
tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time
dependencies).

Hi,

For normal users other than root add user name to "lp" and "sys" group, you will need to do one of the following:

Command Line:

su -c "/usr/sbin/usermod -a -G lp,sys $USER"

Restart your PC (or) Logout and Login

Thanks,
Goutam Kodu

Thanks, I got a little closer by following your advice. As normal
user, I can now open the HP Device Manager and see the printer online.
I can also run xsane and scan.

Printing still does not work, however. The printer status is idle,
but in hp-info I see a status message that says this:
cups-missing-filter-warning

And running hp-check I get this warning:
warning: Printer is not HPLIP installed. Printers must use the hp: or
hpfax: CUPS backend to function in HPLIP.

Here is the full output from hp-check:

Hi,

By default hpijs is configured which i can see in the hp-check out-put and hpijs ppd is picked up. My suggestion is to configure hplip-3.11.5 with hpcups enabled. The below link would help you to follow the steps and do the same.
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/fedora_core.html

Let me know on the same. If problem still persists then post us the "hp-check -t" output.

Thanks & Regards,
Goutam Kodu

I downloaded the tarball and followed the compilation/installation
steps in the link you provided. After doing so, I was able to scan
and print, so it seems that I have it working. Thank you for your
help.

I had some concern about the step that said "Disable SELinux or run
SELinux in permissive mode" so I didn't do that. I am not keen on the
idea of loosening security controls so an application can run.

Thanks goutamkk, that solved my question.
