Ubuntu 10.04 can't deal with hp deskjet2050 j510

Asked by Alexander Rzhannikov

Hi, now I have a trouble. I've bought HP DeskJet 2050 j510 in Yekaterinburg, Russia. In one article in comp magazine i've read this multifunctional device will deal with Ubunty smartly. Just Plug&Work. So my ubuntu 10.04 sees the device, offers me to choose from several devices or provide PPd file or to search for a printer driver. When i chose to select printer from database it offers only deskjet 2000 - CUPS+GutenPrint v5.2.5 Simplified as recomended. So, if I choose it , test page isn't printing. I have no anu ppd-file to provide in second variant. And i dont't know there to look for driver. Irenewed all the hplip components of my system. And I have a disk for Win & Mc. What I shal to do?

Hi Alexander,

Currently Scan is not supported for HP DeskJet 2050 J510. As a work around you can follow the below instruciotns

1. Open /usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat file as root.
2. Set "io-mfp-mode=1" and "scan-type=7" under "deskjet_2050_j510_series" section and save the file.
3. Now quit hp-toolbox / hp-systray if it is running.
4. Relaunch the toolbox

Scan should work fine now. Please let us know.

Scan support will be provided in the next upcoming release.

Thanks for using HPLIP.

Thanks and Regards,

Hi !
I used that method on my Deskjet 2050, but it didn't work for my scanner on Ubuntu 10.10. With XSane or Simple Scan, it both says that the device is busy, but in fact, it is not : I can print. I installed Hplip 3.10.9 as it is said (compilation, etc...). Any idea ? Do I post a new ticket ?

Thanks,
Nils

Well it doesn't work for me in Xubuntu 10.4 I'm getting message : The queue Deskjet 2050 J510 is not enabled. The reason given is : ' /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed.
To enable it, select 'Enabled' checkbox in the 'Policies' tab for the printer in the printer administration tool. To start this tool, select System-Administration- Printing from the main menu.
However, Xubuntu doesn't have this option, at least I can't find it anywhere in the Applications.

Please, what should I do ? I'm getting quite desperate, previous HP printers did work, but this model...

What I am doing wrong?

I had exactly the same problem but upgrading to latest Xubuntu (I suggest to copy the xubuntu to cd at least 700 MB or to a flash card and install it new) has fixed the problem  instantly , otherwise yuo'll be flooded by advises to get cups and so on but nobody will tell you how

Upgrade your OS to 11.10, this problem is solved in that distributive. I'm still regretting for 10.04, it was the best Ubuntu i've ever seen, but there is no other way to use HP DeskJet 2050
