I think you mean the g510n. HPLIP does support it but as this is new model you'll need the downloaded version from hplipopensource.com rather than the version in Ubuntu.

No, it's not supported as of today. Per http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/index.html the only 4500 models that are currently supported are the g510a, g510b, g510g and g510h. The g510n isn't listed on the unsupported printers page, but it's still not supported. We learned this the hard way to the tune of $150, and to make things more confusing the printer is sold as the Officejet 4500, not the Officejet 4500 g510n, so we didn't even know till we got it home.

You can get at least partial printing support by installing the latest HPLIP (Lucid's version is fine but we have machines running Hardy and Karmic, and I've done it on Karmic), forcing it to use the g510g-m driver and connecting a USB cable, but the scanning (for which we bought it) and wireless printing (for which we paid the extra 30 bucks over a comparable wired printer) don't work. Also, the HPLIP toolbox won't recognize it at all, wired or wireless, and when I was doing my wired printing tests, periodically the printer would freak out, flashing its display rapidly and scrolling "Please power off and then on" across it.

Most insulting is that the Officejet 4500 is on HPLIP's list of recommended printers, though the sub-model-numbers or whatever you call "g510a" etc. are listed individually and that should have been a clue something was off.

Very disappointing and I hope HP gets a working driver out soon. We can't return ours and are still looking for a cheap Linux-supported sheet-fed scanner, but if you still can return it, you should.

There is a workaround on https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/111135 - it also looks like a new version with the correct metadata will be available in a few days.
