When happens when you restart AWN after making a button selection?

unfortunately no good. i even logged out and back in. can't switch it from the big gold foot. when i run it in a terminal with the settings flag, it tells me the selected button is not found. any config changes i could make?

Since the problem is AWN specific you may need to look into how to configure it to allow the use of GnoMenu buttons. The Gold Foot is not the default button for GnoMenu so its has to be an AWN setting.

thank you for pointing out the awn aspect. i managed to change it by copying the .png button image that i wanted use from /usr/share/gnomenu/Themes/buttons to /usr/lib/gnomenu/graphics, changing the name of the .png-file to logo.png and converting that image to an .svg-image with inkscape which i then saved to the same folder.it sounds more complicated than it really ia all you need are the .png-file/,nkscape and root privelages.so my question is answered.

This is a hack not a solution. What's the real solution as to why Gnomenu can't use button themes?

Because AWN and Gnome 2 are two very different sets of code. GnoMenu was
written for Gnome 2 not Awn. and to be perfectly clear unless you use
that hack I don't think a menu program can change the button in AWN.
