Problem restoring old Deja Dupe backups

Asked by Brad Clawson

I originally posted as similar question (#706061) in 2023 but didn't followup with additional information that Michael Terry requested.

I have make several backups from Ubuntu 22.10 and 22.04 but after reinstalling Ubuntu 22.04 to multiple external locations including Google Drive, thumb drives and a second hard drive on the PC.
I have tried restoring the files using Backup but the backups can't be found when I make sure the path and file names in Preferences
I have tried making a fresh backup and then replacing the new duplicity files with ones from previous backups without success.
I have unsuccessfully tried command line suggestions from on-line searches on the problem.
I didn't keep track of encryption passwords on any of the backups.
I have just reinstalled Backups. It indicates that the most recent backup was 117 days ago. I tried restoring from that location but get the massage: Error creating directory /media/Brad/CEB8-0B; Permission denied. This drive is a second drive on my PC and I can access the backup file in Files.

Let me know if there is other information that I can provide.

That's going to be hard/impossible to fix.

OK... you can access that folder, but can you write to it? It seems like Deja Dup is trying to create a folder - can you do that in Files?

Michael,
thanks for getting back to me.

As for the passwords, that may not be a problem because I use a just a few different onee.

I have full rights to all of the places that the backups are located.

I'd like to keep this open until I get a reply as to whether there is a way to restore the backups base on the follow up response I made on 3/12.

Hello Brad,

if I were in your situation I would copy one of the encrypted files from the backup to my computer and try to decrypt it using gpg. This way you can figure out the correct password before continuing with the backup program.

Vej, Thanks for the reply and your ideas. I would have used just one of
three passwords for the backups so that isn't a major problem. My problem
is having Deja Dup recognize the backup. I've tried copying it to local
computers, creating a new backup and then replacing it with the old one and
anything else I could think of. It is hard to believe that my problem is
unique and I'm hoping that someone can help. I appreciate your trying.

Then copy the backup to the local computer, make sure that the normal (i.e. non admin) user can read and write there, create a folder /tmp/restore, make sure that the normal user can read and write there and execute "duplicity file:///path/to/local/copy/of/backup /tmp/restore"
