ddrescue-gui not showing rdisk in the source list

Asked by livein21st

Hello, i am trying to recover my failing harddrive which have lots of bad sectors i guess so, and also mft corrupted. i am using ddrescue-gui on Mac os x el-capitan. there are two problems actually. 1) the backup process too slow. i am getting speed in b/s. 2) i read in some Q/A that choosing rdisk rather then disk from source file will impact on the speed. but i am not able to see the rdisk in the list. can you please help me with it. my hard drive is failing and i tried almost all the recovery software method but none of them work. ddrescue is the final hope for me. Thank You

Hi,

The backup being slow is normal, but try the "best recovery" present in the settings window if you haven't yet, and as for /dev/rdisk devices, just select a /dev/disk device and check "Use Direct Disk Access", it does the same thing ๐Ÿ˜Š
Try using a fan or a cool room to keep the drive cool. You can also start and stop the recovery without losing progress if you use a log file, which may keep it cool if all else fails.

Hope this helps and good luck,
Hamish

Also, if it's literally about to die, you could check the "Soft Run" checkbox to pull as much of the readable data off first, then try to grab the slow bits.

Hope this helps you,
Hamish

Thank you for reply Hamish!! let me tell you the current situation,

currently i puted my drive for backup and i applied best "fastest recovery" option.
Q. can i stop and change that option to best recovery and restart the process. will it work..?

second thing i am maintaining a log file. now to restart the process from the log file i am selecting the source drive(failing drive), then the one and only log file which is located on my desktop folder and the destination as image file at another harddrive folder.
now while restarting i am selecting the same image file which one created by ddrescue last time. is it the right thing to re-start the process or there is somethig else..? or should i have to create another file and then merge it or something..? i mean ddrescui is updating the current image file only right..?

Hi,

Yep, you can restart with different options, that's fine ๐Ÿ˜Š

And yep again, use the same input, log, and output files as before, that'll be fine ๐Ÿ˜Š

It's at the top of the settings window, in Edit>Settings menu and also accessible from a button on the main window.

Note that you'll have to stop ddrescue first before you can change the settings.

Hi,

Yeah, you need to upgrade the gui to version 1.5.1, the latest version, because I can see in the screenshot that you're using 1.3, which doesn't have that feature.

You'll still be able to use the same input, output, and log files, and the new version is available at www.launchpad.net/ddrescue-gui/1.x/1.5.1

Hi,

firstly Thank You for your help and guidance. here i just wanted to let you know what i am doing righ now so further you can guide me.currently backingup my drive with new version(DDRescue-GUI v1.5.1) from the link you provided earlier. i am not backingup continuesly because i can not let my machine ON all days long, instead i am running backup every morning and abort it at evening or night. then again restart it next day. please let me know if there is any precautions i have to take while doing this. i am mainting the log file also with extra backup everytime i restart(incase i need it). and ievery time while start the process, i am selecting the same log file and same destination image file to overrite it.
also sharing the screenshots of the process.
