Stopping and Restarting DDrescue-GUI

Asked by mpmccabe

Hi,

I have a question as a user of ddr-gui about stopping and restarting it.
what am I able to do. It is 3.5 days into what looks like a 10 day process [3tb clone].
I am just a punter with a failing hd and am trying to save as much as I can
so keeping the meddling and interfering to a minimum. Can I stop the process
and start it again or should I just let it run. I have been saving a RescueLog file
from the beginning too.

Part of my asking is that I am using Vers. 1.0.2 on Mac 10.7.5 and thought the
latest version might be 1. faster and more efficient and 2. rescue more data.

Any advice on this ?

thanks

martin

I don't understand: 1.3 is the only version that supports Mac is x. What do you mean when you say 1.0.2?
A newer version should not make much difference, and using log files between versions of ddrescue probably won't work.
You can safely stop and a start, as long as you keep exactly the same setting and output files when you start again.

I wish you luck with your recovery, and I hope this helps you'

Hamish,

thanks for that prompt reply.

I can assure you I am using ver. 1.0.2. I found a review of it on-line and just
downloaded without checking whether it was up to date but I didn't
encounter any issues installing or running it. I did read your note about
MacOSX and 1.3 but it didn't make sense as it was up and running at that stage.

I think I will just let it run and see what comes as my 10 day completion
estimate now looks like 14 days.

I am happy, so far,

best

Martin

I don't see any screen grab, but I understand now.
I was confused because I never made version 1.0.2, only 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3.
You're using a different program with the same name written by mashiwerk.
His basically popped up at the same time as mine, so I think that's just a strange coincidence...
I can't really give you tech support for that program, but you probably can't switch to mine without losing your progress, because mine uses a newer version of ddrescue on the Mac.

Hamish,

Oh dear that is embarrassing. I will claim newbie stupidity on that.
I am sorry about wasting your time on this.
I will of course upgrade to your implementation of ddrescue once this is
done.

It's fine!
I would imagine it to be a very easy mistake to make, given they have
exactly the same name!

I hope your recovery goes well,
Hamish

Hello everyone, I`m sorry if it`s not the wrong place to ask this, or even if it is a really newbie question, but ... i`m actually a really newbie and i even don`t have fluency in english so it`s been a bit hard to find something about the software, and i think this post was the nearest to that for me, so i beg you to help me ... (haha, yes, a bit dramatical, but it`s really serious)
Well, said that, let`s start the real question ...
You see, i`m trying to rescue my hard drive of 300gb (actually 210 used), but i only have one 150gb hd and other 80gb hd. So i was wandering if is it possible to get the rescue file (the img file i think), with ddr-gui in process (or maybe stopped) and transfer from the 150gb hd to the 80gb hd.
Well, if it`s possible, to do that, probably stopped. First, how do i stop the program? I just need to abort it, and then restart it later? (with the same logfile)
Can i turn off my notebook to change the hds?
By the way, the image file that i`m saying is a file which i`m sending to a folder in the 150gb that i just create there (which means that i`m not sure if it`s the right place)
Well, i would really appreciate some answer, but if it`s not possible, could you recommend me some guide or reference (about ddr-gui - not ddrescue - if it`s possible? please ...)
Well, anyway, thanks!

*what i mean by get the file in process (or stopped) is to get a smaller than 150gb file (instead of the 210gb file of the whole process)

Hi

Yep, this is the right place to ask, but could you create a new question please, because this one's already solved, and it gets a bit hard to keep track of things otherwise.

I don't quite understand your problem, but I'm willing to help you.

In your new question, could you please also tell me what OS you're running (Mac OS X, Ubuntu, Linux Mint etc), and what version of DDRescue-GUI you're running too?

Thanks,
Hamish
