Connecting through a corporate LAn

Asked by K.NobZ

I access the internet through a university LAN. I just dwnloaded DC++ and it has no access to the internet whatsoever. I tried opening the public hubs (every single provided hublist server) and nothing works. I get various error messages that imply that there is no connection.

Furthermore, I tried opening the 'About' box for DC++ and there IS an error checking the Latest version.

Some extra info: I DO have access to the internet through browsers and university programs (i.e groupwise, novelle etc...) but other applications such as MxitPC DC++ and Outlook cannot gain access.

And yes i have checked that DC++ is added as an exception to the Windows firewall thingy. Whats funny is that there is no pop up that asks me if i wanna unblock it. In anycase to be safe i disabled my firewall and still nothing.

Okay another piece of information is that McAfee Enterprise 8.5i is installed. AS far as i can see it has no firewall client. There is definitely no option in its console to suggest it has a firewall. Uhm ja.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With all due respect don't you think its stupid to place a quote and a link there and no explanation.

Come now if i had mind reading abilities I'm sure i could solve this but i don't and I would like a decent response.

Many thanks,
Kyle

I'd like to add as well that I read that web page and there is NOTHING about a firewall except that dumb quote.

Also i searched the help files of the actual program and it returned 0 results.

Maybe yes.
This way you checked again that you probably don't have software firewall. Better to check it once more because if its not a software firewall you probably out of luck using p2p.
Now check your browser's proxy settings. Is there a HTTP proxy server set? If so can you browse without proxy (direct connection)?

OKay well no there are no proxy settings. (I'm assuming that if the "use a proxy server for your LAN" checkbox is deselected) And I'm browsing the intranet and internet perfectly.

Isn't there a chat feature I could use to alk to you on this site?

No but you can log on to the public development hub ( adc://devpublic.adcportal.com:16591 )

To log on to the hub of course you need a computer where DC++ is able to connect to outside...
Do you know anyone else connected to your lan who's able to use DC++ (or any other p2p) ? This would be an answer to the initial question since if others able to use p2p then the problem is at your computer.
There is a high chance though, since DC++ uses the same way to downloading hublist and version info as a web browser...

yes, definitely. Almost the whole of campus is using dc++ to share
files. Campus has warned us against it but being students we don't
care.

Seriously i do know other people that are using it though.

to me it definitely sounds like a software firewall on *your* machine blocking DC++. you should check again.

try to go to <http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/version.xml> from your web browser. that's the same link DC++ uses to download the info in the about dialog.

OKay so I tried to go to that site poy and it says

"
The XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A semi colon character was expected. Error processing resource 'http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/version.xml'. Line 2, Po...

 <URL>https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=40287&package_id=70036&release_id=647354</URL&...
"

I don't know how else to check for a firewall. I've now disabled my firewall completely and well nothing.

this means your browser managed to download that XML file correctly. (it can't properly display it, but it did manage to download it.)
and when DC++ tries to get the same file from the same address using similar connection methods, to display it in the about dialog, it fails. which confirms the firewall idea...

what's your version of Win? you might want to try to run it with your administrator account, and/or download a fresh copy of DC++, put it in your "my documents" folder, and try to run it from there.

okay well what i'm going to do now quick is backup up my settings and
files, totally re-install windows, leave out installing McAfee and
install dc++ and then try again. I will let you know how that goes.

BTW its Windows Xp pro SP3

okay so i did all that and i opened dc++ and the firewall thing popped up and asked me if i wanted to keep blocking the application ( i'm assuming that this means it tried to make a connection to the internet) and anyway I chose the 'unblock' option and well still nothing.

~sigh~ i'ma start slitting my wrists.

Are you sure that your computer connected to one network only? I mean don't you have multiple lan interfaces, or some scenario that described in this article? http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-1054825.html

okay no i checked. its pretty much just one lan interface. One connection, one IP address. Obviously DCHP assigned to work woth the UCT network.

you wrote that Outlook and others didn't work? is it still the case? you could try other random programs, like mIRC, eMule, see if they can grab a connection...

Revision history for this message
K.NobZ (obrienkyle91) said :

yes that is still the case. Anyway so i did download that stuff and well that doesn't get a connection either. Whats strange though is shit like Google Earth gets a connection. Microsoft Office Groove gets a connection and so on and so forth.

I did talk to a second year here and they said that we actually have to connect to a specific hub through the lan using dc++ and that we don't connect through the internet at all.

So my deduction can only be this. The Server, along with ICTS, actually approves a list of programs to gain access to the internet (to lower network usage). And if you're asking 'then why didn't Outlook work?'. WEll many corporate organizations use a specific email client. In our case that is Novell Groupwise and they don't allow the use of Outlook to read our emails due to safety reason etc....

Therefore i won't b able to use mxit unless i dial up through my phone. I appreciate the help guys. Really i do. Uhm and if anyone finds a way around all that server crap please let me know!

:)

I guess that somebody is blocking internet features. They are filtering any tcp based connection except http or some other allowed thingies. One way would be to mask dc++ under http or https traffic, or some other idea that springs to my mind ( dont know if it works ) : tunneling via http port
