Problems with active mode after upgrading to 0.705.

Asked by ekke

I haven't seen an answer to my problem anywhere, some have the same issue, but non of the answers work for me.

Upgraded to 0.705 a few days ago. Got the "unable to open TCP/TLS port"-message at startup and since I'm not in active mode as before, despite the fact that no settings have changed, I blame that error-message for everything. Tried to solve the problem by first removing the TLS-value completely, then by opening a new port on my hub (opening both TCP/UDP) just for TLS. So that I have two ports open, one for TCP/UDP and one for TLS. But still no success.

What to do? Didn't have any problems with this with my previous version.

Verify that you dont have a software firewall on your pc where programs need to be specified to allow access, if so delete and introduce the DC++ again, maybe that helps

Make also sure that no other programs using those ports on your pc by using a command prompt and there type netstat -a , that should show what ports are "listening" on your pc :)

Ok, I deleted the specification in windows firewall and re-intruduced DC++ as an exception once again. But it didn't work. Unless you meant reinstalling DC++?

I'm also using avast!, but it didn't help to turn it off so I ruled out that option. Maybe there's something with avast! that I'm unaware of? I'm new with that program.

The ports are indeed "listening".

Unable to open TCP/TLS port means that other application uses your ports (maybe the old version of dc++??). Try other ports and to uninstall avast. Do you use port forwarding or UPnP for active mode?

I'm sure that DC++ is the only program using those ports. I've also considered the possibility of older DC-versions running in the background, but unless it hides very well, it's not.

I've already tried other ports, changed ports 3 times, but no results.

I use port forwarding for active mode, and as of now I have one port open for TCP/UDP and different port open for TLS (I improvised and opened a port on my router and allowed TCP/UDP and just added that portnumber as TLS-port in connection settings).

Uninstall avast sounds a little drastic, but that's my latest installation so it's easy to blame it.

You did what you should with the TLS port - you need it only for secure transfers on ADC hubs though.
Use canyouseeme.org for checking if your ports are correctly forwarded. Uninstalling avast may drastic but doesn't take so long. If it works without avast then you should dig into its settings as many people using DC++ successfully with it.

According to canyouseeme.org are my two DC++ assigned ports visible.

I have now uninstalled avast, but it didn't change how DC++ works. I'm still in passive mode. (so I installed avast again)

So, I suppose the next step to try is to re-install DC++? May be that the d/l-queue disapears, it's no use to me now anyway.

If a reinstallation doesn't succeed, I guess installing an older version of DC++ would be in order.

Are the ports still visible when you exit DC++? (It would mean you run multiple versions of DC++ with the same port settings)
If you able to do a reinstall and really won't lost important data, after uninstalling make sure that no files remainig in the DC++ directory.
If this isn't a firewall or multiple instance issue, I really can't see why should an older version work...

...and check our very new faq made for upgrade problems may you find something doesn't mentioned here : https://answers.launchpad.net/dcplusplus/+faq/83

Still no solution to my problems. I've grown to like DC++ over the years, but this upgrade really gave me problems like never before.

I'm not running multiple versions of DC++, and the fact that the ports are no longer visible after exiting the program shows this. I have also completly deleted DC++ and installed it over again fram scratch, the same with all settings in WinXP firewall and my DLink router. It's back to the settings that worked fine with earlier versions of DC++. The router has ports open, the software firewall aswell, (three different ports for TCP/UDP/TLS).

I've read the new FAQ (which is very good btw), and used it as a checklist.

I have no problems connecting to hubs, and no problems to upload. I'm in classic passive mode and can't get into active.

What have I missed or overseen? I've been digging in to the settings of all the programs that's even remotly possible to screw with my DC++.

Ok then I can only recommend that download the .zip version of 0.705, extract to a folder and try to do the settings from scratch. If it still doesn't help then the last step is really to go back to the older version.

Sorry I re-read your answer, as you did the fresh reinstall and it doesn't helped so... try with 0.699 let's see what happens...

I have the exact same problem. I went as far as reinstalling Vista to make sure nothing would interfere with DC++ but it still won't let me access the ports. :(
DC++ 0.699 work like a charm so I can't really understand the problem with 0.705?!?
I've tried everything from setting up my router again to killing firewalls but nothing helps..

Any ideas?

I also have the same problem using dc++ 0.7091, except I am running XP SP3. The port forwarding is setup correctly, the settings haven't changed for years. I have rechecked the settings and completed an online port scan to confirm that the port forwarding is setup correctly. I have also tried using different ports with no success.

I installed dc++ 0.699 and did end up having active mode work, however that is not a good fix as the program frequently hangs/freezes and the hubs randomly disconnect me. Any suggestions on what else I could try?

For now I have resorted to using dc++ 0.7091 in passive mode, it works although it feels so crippled.

Can you help with this problem?
