DC++ and DOSCIS

Asked by FRED MILES

At the moment I am using Virgin Cable Broadband (UK). Using their Modem & D-Link router to connect to DC++. Their siginal transmits useing DOCRIS 1.

Since I started using Windows 7 with DC++ 0.781. I do not have any problems connecting. Thanks to dc++'s new auto connection type detection.

About 18 months ago I tried a faster speed package. I never managed to make a connection (I could not manually set up the ports correctley) Virgin used DOCRIS 4. Resulting in Dc++ Blowing it brains out. Therefore needing a full re-install before i could try again.

As I understand it Docris 1 transmits 1 siginal. Docris 4 transmits 4.

I have just been offered a new package by Virgin (UK). This includes a new HUB, transmitting on DOCRIS 4. which replaces the existing Modem & Router.

NOW the question:: Will DC++ 0.781 using windows 7 (32Bit). Accept a Docris 4 signal & connect the ports automatically using DC++'s new auto connection type detection.

Thanks Fred MIlws (FreddyCougar).

i am not familiar with these cable offerings, but it should generally not matter what medium DC traffic transits through, be it DSL, Wifi, satellite, cable or even duct tape. all that is required to connect to other users is for your network topology to allow outsiders to reach your computer; the DC++ connection type detection tries its best to achieve that.

what exactly do you mean by "Blowing it brains out"? a wrong connection type detection should be easily fixable by editing settings, without the need to re-install.

as for the final question, it all depends on the kind of network topology your ISP will provide you with; but DC++ generally manages to handle port forwarding. if it doesn't, there are always alternate ways, see <http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/webhelp/faq_connection.html>.

for more tailored answers, paste here the contents of the "detection log" box in settings.

Thank's for taking the time & trouble looking at my problem.

My worry is that to upgrade with VIRGIN will cost me more money (It's not cheap here in the UK) + I would have to sign up to a new 12 month contract. If i encounter the same problems again I'm stuck with them for 12 months.

"Blowing its brains out" = Dc++ would run for several hours. Then it would crash. No matter what I tried. I could not get dc++ to run normally again. I also tried. <http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/webhelp/faq_connection.html=

Examples of problems:
Down & Upload speeds were terrible (Slow).
some download Q's disappeared.
Search results were hit & miss. If I searched & found something & selected it for a new download. Sometimes It would not show up in the download Q. Or would & then disappear after a short time. Etc. Etc.

So i quess it's up to me. take the plunge & hope dc++'s new connection type detection will solve the problem. Or stay as I am & do a bit more detective work on the problem.

Once again thanks for your time & effort on this one. It's much appreciated.

it's hard to predict how changing your connection would affect DC++ speeds; hopefully you can find out other people who are running on the new offering to tell you their experience.

however, the rest of the problems you seem to have hit shouldn't be related to the network, especially crashes (some instances of crashes after long runs are getting fixed in the next version) and downloads disappearing for no reason (that would be a bug if it were to be verified).

the only real issue that generally affects DC++ when switching the connection is how well it can map the ports it needs on the new router. if you can find out before hand that your new modem has UPnP support, you should be safe.

Poy.

YES the new router supports Upnp.

I will give it a go in the near future.
